Too many grocery stores currently have self checkout and their aisles are congested with employees pulling product for pick up customers. The worst of both worlds. The next logical move in my opinion is to automate selection for all product; customer either preorders or uses kiosk to place order. Stores will actually be warehouses with small storefronts to pick up orders. Large chains could return to the food deserts and find the other locations where this format is the most practical while providing some stores with the “shop the aisles” experience for those who wish to.

Unfortunately too many retailers especially corporate only look at cost and savings versus customer retention and customer service. I don’t see the self-checkouts going away anytime soon. I look at retailers all around the country and they keep cutting labor and service for profits; there’s a lot of opportunities out there for good operators.
