Res Artis farewells Communication & Program Coordinator Josephine Mead
|
Dear Members, artists and friends, Since joining Res Artis at the end of 2021 I have loved connecting with Members, artists, and arts-workers from all over the world through my role as Communication & Program Coordinator. It has allowed me to travel— physically, to London last year, and virtually, all over the globe. I am so grateful for all that I have learnt from Res Artis staff and our Board during this time. Through my experience at Res Artis and through undertaking several residencies with our Members, I'm consistently inspired by the transformative power of arts residencies. I'll be concluding my role at Res Artis in May to focus on my artistic practice and community-building initiatives for local arts organisations in my home in Naarm/Melbourne. - Josephine Mead |

Res Artis farewells Membership Officer Nao Hirata
|
Dear Members, My time at Res Artis as Membership Officer for 14 months was short but such an invaluable experience. It has been a privilege to assist our Members! It was wonderful to have met some of you in person at our London conference in September last year. I will be relocating to Arita town in the Southern part of Japan, joining a team setting up a new arts residency. I am grateful for the experiences and opportunities I've had during my time here. Thank you to everyone for making my time with Res Artis so enriching. Wishing you all the very best for your future endeavours. - Nao Hirata |

Since our last eNews, Res Artis has continued to hold initial Regional Meetings to outline specific issues facing arts residencies in specific geographic locations. We recently met with a group of professionals from Italy, for a conversation facilitated by Giulio Verago from VIR Viafarini-in-residence. We were joined by Caterina Monteni and Sabrina Samorì (Nuovo Forno del Pane - MAMbo, Bologna); Ginevra D’oria (Una Boccata d’Arte, Fondazione Elpis, Milan); Angelica Bollettinari and Anna Tagliacozzo (CASTRO, Rome); Edoardo Monti (Palazzo Monti, Brescia); Susanna Ravelli (Casa degli Artisti, Milan); Elisa Troiano and Alexandro Tripodi (Cripta 747, Turin) and Marea Art Project. All participants commented on funding being an ongoing issue in Italy. There is a lack of arts councils within municipal / governmental bodies at all levels of the sector and it was noted that great structural change / advocacy is needed. This means there is also a lack of understanding of the importance, relevance and value of arts residencies and how they contribute to wider arts and cultural outcomes in Italy. |

On February 6, 2024 Res Artis hosted a webinar: 'How to Inhabit Instability: Showcase of Ukrainian Art Residencies', hosted by Zapravka. In September 2022, an international Res Artis Conference was planned in Kyiv as a joint project of IZOLYATSIA Platform for Cultural Initiatives, House of Europe, Goethe-Institut in Ukraine, and the Ukrainian Institute. It would have become the first international forum for art residences of this scale in Ukraine. The working title of the conference was “How to Inhabit Instability?” Russian full-scale invasion of Ukraine changed everything. Click the link below to watch the webinar and learn how arts residencies in Ukraine have coped with the war. |

Image courtesy of Res Artis. At Res Artis we are focused on creating a future for the global arts residency sector that works towards building accessible residency opportunities for everyone. At the end of last year we sat down with Sherryl Catto from ActionSpace, Charlotte Seebeck from MASSIA and Paula Orrell from Contemporary Visual Arts Network (CVAN). They spoke about their experiences of access and how one can "fight the fear" that often stops residency hosts and cultural organisations from assisting those with access requirements.
