Happy New Year! ☔ It’s finally 2021. Today, an illustrated essay about the maddening self-awareness of being Black in public, a look at the Baltimore Museum of Art’s 33 recent acquisitions, all by women artists, and photos from the streets of Argentina, where celebrations marked the legalization of abortion.– Hrag Vartanian, editor-in-chief | |

In a new illustrated essay, CM Campbell writes about the Hulu series Woke, which deals with the maddening self-awareness of being Black in public.“With the murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and so many others, and this summer’s cultural reckoning, a growing awareness of deeply rooted anti-Blackness seems to finally be catching on, though to varying degrees,” Campbell writes. “Woke stands out at this moment by highlighting the threats and challenges that Black people face on a daily basis.” |
