Plus, a massive fentanyl shipment from Grand Rapids enough to kill everyone in Michigan, feds say
In today's newsletter, 6 Colorado men fined $6,600 for poaching 460 pounds of salmon in Northern Michigan, some Michigan campers want campfire-free sites, and Michigan's Best Local Eats. |
Did you see the Northern Lights? |
Quite a few Michiganders did! Including pilot Rod Pentoney who has caught Lady Aurora about 60 to 70 times before in places like Greenland, Iceland and Alaska, but said this show was the best he'd ever seen. Bundled in blankets to brave the chilly bayside air and armed with cameras, visitors flocked to the Bay City State Park to get a glimpse of the bright green aurora, a rarity in the area. If you missed out, there's still some fun in the sky to be seen. Five planets, the moon and a star cluster will align in what’s called a “planet parade" tonight. |

‘Right-to-work’ is repealed in victory for organized labor |
No longer: Michigan has become the first state in nearly 60 years to undo “right-to-work,” nearly one decade after it became law in the state. The policy prevented unions from requiring employees to join a union or pay fees in order to work in a unionized workplace. Let's dive into it: The U.S. Center for Advanced Manufacturing in Troy is evidence to some of Michigan’s top Republicans of a conspiracy. A partnership between the World Economic Forum and the state to help the manufacturing industry adapt to changing technology, the center has been spotlighted by state Republican chair Kristina Karamo, who speculates it’s the home of a globalist plot. Michigan has a transparency problem: Years of data indicate the state routinely ranks among the lowest in the country for government ethics an accountability measures. Three months into a new majority, the status quo appears largely in tact. Don't forget to check out your guide to Michigan politics for our weekly round-up. |

6 Colorado men fined $6,600 for poaching 460 pounds of salmon in Northern Michigan |
Reeling in: Six Colorado residents will pay $1,100 each after they pleaded guilty to taking fish from the Manistee River via an illegal method. The DNR donated the 460 pounds of fresh fish to Manistee County families in need. Also in crime: Federal drug agents seized 20 kilos of fentanyl this week that was being transported from Grand Rapids to metro Detroit. The DEA said that amount of the painkiller fentanyl was enough to provide a deadly dose to nearly all 10 million people in Michigan. Okay now for some better news: Remember the 14-year-old who struggled to find shoes that fit? Eric Kilburn Jr. met with Robb Cropp, the senior director of Footwear Development at Under Armour, so the company could get a 3D rendering of his feet and make him custom shoes that will be Under Armour’s largest pair ever. |

Some Michigan campers want campfire-free sites, DNR looking into options |
Taking concern into consideration: Spurred by requests from some campers who want to avoid campfire smoke during their stays at Michigan parks, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources is looking into the possibility of offering campfire-free camping opportunities in the future. Sparking outrage: A proposed 20 miles of new high-voltage power lines has pitted residents and local governments against Consumers Energy. In the southeast: The state of Michigan and Gelman Sciences have reached terms on a new cleanup and monitoring plan for the Gelman dioxane plume in the Ann Arbor area. And the Gault Village Shopping Center is soon set to meet the wrecking ball. |

Michigan hockey advances to Frozen Four on overtime goal |
Frozen Four: Michigan’s hockey team is headed back to the Frozen Four for a second straight season and an NCAA-record 27th time. Season ending: The MHSAA boys basketball state tournament concluded with the crowning of four state champions at Michigan State University’s Breslin Center. The winners were - D1 Cass Tech, D2 Ferndale, D3 Flint Beecher, and D4 Munising. Down to the wire: Here's where the Tigers’ roster stands now after the latest round of cuts. |

A few of Michigan's Best Local Eats |
If you're unfamiliar: Our reporters from across the state try out local restaurants and give you the scoop. A few of our recents - Roma’s Family Restaurant in Bay City and Baby Bear Burger in Jackson. And here's our latest in Ann Arbor, Grand Blanc, Muskegon, and Grand Rapids. Speaking of GR, a rooftop patio is planned for popular nightlife hot spot. A young baker: Lilly Turner, a 17-year-old in Holland, is the owner of a successful baking business, making sweet treats from scratch in her home or church kitchen. Balancing school and a business with a nationwide customer base, here's her story. Let's end it with this: Michigan’s Adventure will stay open through Oct. 15 this fall, going well beyond how long the park traditionally stays open. It closed on Sept. 5 in 2022, which was Labor Day. |
