Michigan gun laws will change in 2024. Hereâs how. |
Come February, Michiganders will be able to seek temporary removal of firearms from at-risk individuals by obtaining an extreme risk protection order, the formal name for a red flag complaint. There's more: Michiganders will also be required to safely store firearms when minors are present and background check provisions will apply in the purchasing of all firearms. A conflict: Coffee Clubhouse has received thousands of complaints - via phone, email and social media - from PETA supporters over an upcoming reindeer display. |

Do you know what manoomin is? Michiganâs state native grain. |
It's official: Gov. Gretchen Whitmer signed legislation this week to make manoomin â wild rice â the stateâs official native grain. The keystone aquatic plant with special importance to Indigenous peoples is now a Michigan state symbol just like the Petoskey stone and white pine tree. In Edenville township: A judge determined Lee Mueller was liable for $119.8 million in damages to fisheries and the ecosystem that sustained aquatic mussels before the May 2020 flood. Not all victims of the flood were comforted by the ruling. More in public interest: One of the countryâs best teachers got fed up with politics in the South and moved to Michigan. |

Another change: The ban on short-term rentals in Park Township has been temporarily lifted by an Ottawa County Circuit Court judge. On the road: New boards along I-94 will occasionally display lower speed limits. Here's what it means for drivers. |

Michigan âextreme skiingâ destination named best ski resort in North America |
After weeks of voting, Mount Bohemia has been crowned North Americaâs best ski resort by readers of USA Today. In publishing the results, the pollâs editors highlighted some of Bohemiaâs exemplary features, including a 900-foot vertical drop and two-mile ski run. Highlighting more winter fun: A pair of Michigan state parks are embracing the magic of the season with special âEnchanted Borealisâ hikes in December, featuring lanterns, holiday lights and cozy campfires. An update: An 8-mile section of an Upper Peninsula snowmobile trail is reopened after five years and a $10.5 million project to repair damage from an historic storm event, officials said. |
