Morning Briefing

MONDAY, DECEMBER 4, 2023

In today's newsletter, a $368M rate hike on DTE customers, Lions hold on for 9th win and do you know what manoomin is?

Next stop, the Rose Bowl 🌹

Michigan football captured its third straight Big Ten championship after blanking Iowa 26-0. Now, Michigan will face No. 4 Alabama at the Rose Bowl in California. Here's why the College Football Playoff committee ranked Michigan No. 1 over Washington.

We were on the field for the celebration where Tony Petitti got booed, injured offensive lineman Zak Zinter accepted the championship trophy and Jim Harbaugh said "bet."

Even with the big win, there's still one upset Wolverine fan. A Detroit-area lawyer and U-M graduate has sued Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson over the loss of his “G0BLUE” car license plate.

Michigan gun laws will change in 2024. Here’s how.

Come February, Michiganders will be able to seek temporary removal of firearms from at-risk individuals by obtaining an extreme risk protection order, the formal name for a red flag complaint.

There's more: Michiganders will also be required to safely store firearms when minors are present and background check provisions will apply in the purchasing of all firearms.

A conflict: Coffee Clubhouse has received thousands of complaints - via phone, email and social media - from PETA supporters over an upcoming reindeer display.

Do you know what manoomin is? Michigan’s state native grain.

It's official: Gov. Gretchen Whitmer signed legislation this week to make manoomin – wild rice – the state’s official native grain. The keystone aquatic plant with special importance to Indigenous peoples is now a Michigan state symbol just like the Petoskey stone and white pine tree.

In Edenville township: A judge determined Lee Mueller was liable for $119.8 million in damages to fisheries and the ecosystem that sustained aquatic mussels before the May 2020 flood. Not all victims of the flood were comforted by the ruling.

More in public interest: One of the country’s best teachers got fed up with politics in the South and moved to Michigan.

Michigan regulators approve $368M rate hike on DTE customers

Michigan utility regulators approved a request by DTE Energy to raise electricity rates on customers by $368 million a year. The 6.4 percent increase is more than half of what the state’s largest power utility requested and will result in a $6.51 increase in the average monthly residential bill.

Another change: The ban on short-term rentals in Park Township has been temporarily lifted by an Ottawa County Circuit Court judge.

On the road: New boards along I-94 will occasionally display lower speed limits. Here's what it means for drivers.

Lions hold on for 9th win, but concerns continue to grow

Not the cleanest: The Detroit Lions have extended their division lead to three games heading into the final five weeks of the season. But a 33-28 win against New Orleans on Sunday won’t make anyone feel better about the trajectory of their season. Jameson Williams took flight on a reverse touchdown that secured the win.

Couldn't watch? Thanks to MLive's Benjamin Raven, we have a video recap of the game. Plus, what was said nationally after the victory and what was overheard inside the locker room.

Didn't look good: After fearing the worst, the Lions are hopeful Frank Ragnow avoided major injury.

Michigan ‘extreme skiing’ destination named best ski resort in North America

After weeks of voting, Mount Bohemia has been crowned North America’s best ski resort by readers of USA Today. In publishing the results, the poll’s editors highlighted some of Bohemia’s exemplary features, including a 900-foot vertical drop and two-mile ski run.

Highlighting more winter fun: A pair of Michigan state parks are embracing the magic of the season with special “Enchanted Borealis” hikes in December, featuring lanterns, holiday lights and cozy campfires.

An update: An 8-mile section of an Upper Peninsula snowmobile trail is reopened after five years and a $10.5 million project to repair damage from an historic storm event, officials said.
