Dear reader,

Since Line 2 opened in 1966, the folks along Danforth have been living the rarest of dreams. Not only do they have their own subway, making east-west travel a relative breeze, but compared with other transit hubs, they’ve kept density down. (I bet you can’t spy a single tower from Greektown.) It’s resulted in a charming and historically rich corner of town, but one that has quietly ignored its neighbourly duty of supporting the rest of the city in a time of staggering growth. That’s all about to change.

A big part of Ontario Line construction involves ushering in what the wonks at Metrolinx call “transit-oriented communities.” In practice, that means building huge developments on top of and around the new stations, like a skyscraper right at Pape and a cluster of new towers at the Danforth GO. Some residents are already crying foul, but many others are no doubt looking forward to cashing in on increased property values.

I’m thinking of the kind of people who will eventually move into Curb Appeal’s top post this week—a three-floor loft in a 112-year-old church steps from the future Ontario Line. Being so close to the action is certainly one of the unit’s greatest draws.
