Everything happening in Toronto real estate this week

Dear reader,

Since Line 2 opened in 1966, the folks along Danforth have been living the rarest of dreams. Not only do they have their own subway, making east-west travel a relative breeze, but compared with other transit hubs, they’ve kept density down. (I bet you can’t spy a single tower from Greektown.) It’s resulted in a charming and historically rich corner of town, but one that has quietly ignored its neighbourly duty of supporting the rest of the city in a time of staggering growth. That’s all about to change.

A big part of Ontario Line construction involves ushering in what the wonks at Metrolinx call “transit-oriented communities.” In practice, that means building huge developments on top of and around the new stations, like a skyscraper right at Pape and a cluster of new towers at the Danforth GO. Some residents are already crying foul, but many others are no doubt looking forward to cashing in on increased property values.

I’m thinking of the kind of people who will eventually move into Curb Appeal’s top post this week—a three-floor loft in a 112-year-old church steps from the future Ontario Line. Being so close to the action is certainly one of the unit’s greatest draws.

Also in today’s newsletter: $6.7 million for a marble mansion in Kleinburg. Plus, a Rosedale red-brick with a heated driveway and an EV charger. For all of our real estate coverage and more, visit torontolife.com or subscribe to our print edition.

CONDO OF THE WEEK: GOD IS IN THE DETAILS

A $1.3-million unit in the Glebe Lofts on Pape just south of Danforth. The home comes with many features that are rare for a condo of this price: three levels (including a finished basement), a back patio, a second-floor terrace and three bathrooms.

SURREAL ESTATE

What Kleinburg property would be complete without a turret, four fireplaces, nine bathrooms, walls that you can clean with a mop, two garages, a butler’s pantry, a saltwater pool and an acre of land?

HOUSE OF THE WEEK

Here’s a 4,300-square-foot classic Victorian home sitting on a leafy street just north of the Glen Road pedestrian bridge. Recently renovated, it has a dining room for 20 people, a wine cellar, a heated driveway, an EV charger in the garage and a pool as long as a bowling alley out back. And it’s currently on the market for $8.8 million.
