Three words: Fresh hot latkes
Friend — אַ פֿריילעכן חנוכּה / Happy Hanukkah! This is the season for latkes and pontshkes (doughnuts), and if you need recipes, the Forward has you covered. Over the years we’ve published dozens of latke recipes, including the definitive originals as well as versions with spinach, rutabagas, celery root, and more. Of course I recommend everyone learn some Yiddish while you make this year’s latkes. As the Yiddish editor of the Forward, my job is to continue supporting the language the language that's such an important part of our history and helping more Jewish Americans know and appreciate it — including my grandson, Leyzer, who I teach how to make latkes in Yiddish in this video! Empowering Yiddish speakers is our mission at the Forverts. We are one of only a few news outlets still publishing in Yiddish anywhere in the country. Learning about our history, including the languages of our forebears, makes every celebration more meaningful. This is part of why I relish my work helping people create or deepen their relationship with Yiddish and incorporate it into their understanding of Jewish history and identity. The Forward is one of the most important organizations promoting the Yiddish language today and I am incredibly proud of the work we do to support this part of the American Jewish experience. If you agree, join me and donate to the Forward today. Sincerely, Rukhl Schaechter Yiddish Editor, the Forward |
