MEDIA LOSER: MSNBC's Tiffany Cross and CNBC's Shepard Smith Two NBC personalities lost their hosting gigs this week. Variety reported Thursday that CNBC canceled Shepard Smith’s evening program, The News with Shepard Smith, while MSNBC reportedly decided not to renew Tiffany Cross' contract after almost two years. Smith’s show, a news show that failed to attract views on a business network, will reportedly be replaced by an hour of business news. The anchors for that program will be announced at a later date, according to Variety. KC Sullivan, who replaced Mark Hoffman as the head of CNBC earlier in the year, sent a memo to staffers announcing the network's plan to “prioritize and focus on our core strengths of business news and personal finance." Unfortunately for Smith, that means getting rid of a news show that never managed to get ratings impressive enough to stick around. Over at MSNBC, a source familiar with the decision to cut ties with Cross told Mediaite that comments and coverage from the host did not adhere to the network's standards. Cross has not commented publicly on the cancellation. This host has stirred controversy for outrageous commentary in recent months. She has repeatedly declared civil war has begun, and as recently as Thursday night in an interview with Charlamagne tha God she called the state of Florida “the dick of the country.” Although harsh criticism of the right is not out of place at MSNBC, Cross took it to a new level during her time on air, frequently courting outrage and even engaging high profile feuds. MSNBC apparently reached its controversy limit this week, as Cross' comments ultimately lost her a hosting gig. |
