Media Winners & Losers

MEDIA WINNER:
MSNBC's Ari Melber

MSNBC’s Ari Melber has been pulling in impressive ratings lately, often beating out the prime time hosts on his network.

On October 21, Melber topped MSNBC in total viewers at 6 p.m. and beat out all of prime time.He did so again this Thursday with 1.35 million total viewers.

He pulled in 1.415 million total viewers on the 21st, just enough to beat Nicolle Wallace’s 1.391 million total viewers in the hours before him. Chris Hayes landed in third place on the network that night with 1.312 million total viewers at 8 p.m.

Melber also beat CNN time slot competitor Wolf Blitzer, who had575,000 total viewers at 6 p.m. on the 21st, but came in second place during the slot overall, as Fox News’s Bret Baier led the hour with 2.18 million total viewers.

Melber's solid ratings streak continued throughout October and into November, as the host has consistently been in the top three rankings when it comes to the network's ratings in recent weeks.

While Joy Reid's 1.34 million total viewers landed her in first place on MSNBC last Wednesday, Melber was a close second with 1.329 million total viewers.

Melber had another strong one this week. On Wednesday, Melber pulled in 1.35 million total viewers, only landing behind Reid, who racked up 1.53 million total viewers that night.

The host beat out the entire network again on Thursday with 1.35 million total viewers, only coming in second to Reid in the key 25-54 age demographic,

Melber regularly draws in impressive numbers despite not having a prime time slot.

His numbers easily outpace the rest of MSNBC's non-prime time lineup, while he has also managed to regularly beat the network's prime time hosts.

MEDIA LOSER:
MSNBC's Tiffany Cross and CNBC's Shepard Smith

Two NBC personalities lost their hosting gigs this week.

Variety reported Thursday that CNBC canceled Shepard Smith’s evening program, The News with Shepard Smith, while MSNBC reportedly decided not to renew Tiffany Cross' contract after almost two years.

Smith’s show, a news show that failed to attract views on a business network, will reportedly be replaced by an hour of business news. The anchors for that program will be announced at a later date, according to Variety.

KC Sullivan, who replaced Mark Hoffman as the head of CNBC earlier in the year, sent a memo to staffers announcing the network's plan to “prioritize and focus on our core strengths of business news and personal finance."

Unfortunately for Smith, that means getting rid of a news show that never managed to get ratings impressive enough to stick around.

Over at MSNBC, a source familiar with the decision to cut ties with Cross told Mediaite that comments and coverage from the host did not adhere to the network's standards.

Cross has not commented publicly on the cancellation.

This host has stirred controversy for outrageous commentary in recent months. She has repeatedly declared civil war has begun, and as recently as Thursday night in an interview with Charlamagne tha God she called the state of Florida “the dick of the country.”

Although harsh criticism of the right is not out of place at MSNBC, Cross took it to a new level during her time on air, frequently courting outrage and even engaging high profile feuds.

MSNBC apparently reached its controversy limit this week, as Cross' comments ultimately lost her a hosting gig.
