Zuckerberg Denies ‘Meta Monopoly’ Amid Antitrust Trial |
Meta Platforms CEO Mark Zuckerberg has denied claims that the tech giant’s acquisitions of Instagram (2012) and WhatsApp (2014) were done to eliminate competition and establish a social media monopoly. Zuckerberg presented his position as he took the stand on April 14, during the Federal Trade Commission’s (FTC) antitrust trial against his company. According to a report from Reuters, |
- The FTC claimed Meta had created an illegal monopoly, citing previous emails in which Zuckerberg proposed acquiring Instagram and WhatsApp to thwart any potential competition from Facebook.
- In response, Meta argued that these past statements were no longer relevant, particularly due to competition Meta currently faces from fellow tech giants TikTok, YouTube, and Apple.
- The FTC also asserts that Meta holds a monopoly on platforms “used to share content with friends and family,” singling out Snapchat and MeWe as its main competitors.
|
With the Meta antitrust trial expected to last until July, an FTC win could force Meta to sell Instagram or WhatsApp to break the alleged monopoly. Why It Matters: Competition is key, particularly in the tech space. It helps drive innovation and ensures everybody gets a fair shot at bringing end users new ways to use technology. ✨ With that in mind, the Meta antitrust case will have far-reaching implications in the social media world, especially since both Instagram and WhatsApp are estimated to have over 4 billion users worldwide combined. 🤯 |

Intel Sells Majority Stake of Altera FPGA to Silver Lake for $4.46B |
Intel has announced it is selling 51% of its Alterra FPGA chip business to technology investment firm Silver Lake for a cool $4.46 billion. Just a casual Tuesday, amirite? According to Reuters, the sale is the first major act of newly appointed Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan, who is working to streamline the struggling chip manufacturer and catch up in the AI chip race (now led by NVIDIA). Having assumed his new role just last March, Tan said the move “reflects our [Intel’s] commitment to sharpening our focus, lowering our expense structure and strengthening our balance sheet." Intel acquired Altera in 2015 for $16.7 billion, its largest acquisition to date. The Silver Lake deal is expected to close by the end of 2025. If Intel’s spring cleaning includes $4.46 billion, we probably should go dust our desks. Catch you next time for more tech tea! |
