Celebrate with our readers' stories
Dear Friend, The Forward has been publishing news that matters to American Jews for 123 years. That’s enough for three or four generations to have passed it down within a family. This Grandparents Day, we’re excited to honor how The Forward has made its mark across generations. Earlier this year, we shared a call for submissions and here's a glimpse of just a few of the stories our readers have sent to us about their bubbes and zaydes. “My earliest memory is sitting on my grandfather’s lap, teaching me to read Yiddish using The Forward. He, my mom, and the rest of my family were all Holocaust survivors. Yiddish was the only language with which we could communicate. He sat with a glass of tea, a sugar cube between his teeth, me on his lap, The Forward spread out on the table. A wonderful memory forever imprinted in my soul.” — Phyllis G. "My grandmother, who immigrated to the U.S. in 1911, never learned to read English. She read The Forward daily to keep up with the news of the World. When she came to live with us at the age of 83, she continued her daily routine. She and my mother would discuss the news half in Yiddish and half in English. I always was fascinated that it was so current and timely. I regretted I could only speak Yiddish and not read it like Grandma.” — Evelyn W. “A long long time ago, I am 75, we lived in a small town outside of Pittsburgh. My Zaide lived in Philadelphia. My Zaide would mail the Forward to my Mom. My sisters and I would sit on the floor around our Mom while she read from the Forward. We especially loved the Bintel Brief. She would read it in Yiddish and then translate. Thank you for allowing me to bring back this memory. — Karen S. We know that The Forward is a Jewish value for many families. Stories like these remind us that over the last 123 years, The Forward has been part of how our grandparents stayed in-the-know about news from a Jewish perspective, and how they passed that understanding down to the next generation. Generation Forward is our year-long campaign to make sure The Forward is here for 123 years more. If your grandparents read The Forward or taught you the importance of fiercely independent Jewish news, make a donation to support The Forward today. Sincerely, The Forward team |
