| | In the Boundary Waters, tragedy highlights work of all-volunteer rescue squad |
One month ago Tuesday, two canoeists survived a harrowing plunge over a Boundary Waters waterfall. Two disappeared. For the next 16 days, members of the St. Louis County Rescue Squad searched for them.
Of the 95 members of the St. Louis County Rescue Squad, 61 took part in the Curtain Falls mission. Combined they worked almost 6,000 hours. For free. They’re all volunteers.
The St. Louis County Rescue Squad formed in 1958. Rick Slatten’s father was one of the charter members. His earliest memories are of his dad getting dressed for searches, and staying up past his bedtime to hear his stories when he returned.

Across the country, state legislatures are becoming more politically polarized. That’s led some moderate Minnesota lawmakers to step down.
Democratic Rep. Dave Lislegard, of Aurora, is retiring to spend more time with family. He said as a moderate DFLer, he’s worried about polarization taking hold in Minnesota.
“The fear is that the legislators down in St. Paul, and some of these areas, they’re being pushed farther left; Greater Minnesota is becoming further right,” Lislegard said. “When you have that it makes it very hard to govern. We need to tear down some of these walls, between Democrats and Republicans, between Greater Minnesota and the metro. We cannot survive in silos anymore.”
