| | A trans man facing persecution in Russia heard of a ‘trans refuge’ state and fled to Minnesota | Saturday marks one year since Minnesota became a refuge state for transgender people. The state’s status has reached far beyond its borders, leading a Russian couple to seek safety here in Minnesota. “There is a sense of despair and catastrophe,” Erik Beda, 36, said in an interview with MPR News senior producer Aleesa Kuznetsov. The two spoke in Russian. Being LGBTQ+ has long been socially unacceptable in Russia, and eventually against the law. | |

| What else we're watching: | U of M responds to protests, questions over whether arrested protesters are banned from campus. Earlier this week, nine people were arrested, seven of whom are current or former students, for criminal trespass. Those arrested initially received warnings that they would be banned from campus for a year, but the university said it lifted that ban for the current students and employee. Duluth Mayor Reinert tackles housing, streets, downtown in first State of the City speech. Reinert focused largely on the key issues he campaigned on — adding housing and reviving the city’s downtown. But he also managed to break some news during his speech. Vikings take QB J.J. McCarthy from national champ Michigan, Chargers take Joe Alt from North Oaks, Minn. The Minnesota Vikings took Michigan quarterback J.J. McCarthy with the 10th overall pick in the NFL draft on Thursday night, moving up one spot in a trade with the New York Jets to make sure they didn't miss out on their most dire need. Duluth’s Park Point residents air property tax concerns in wake of Cargill purchases. Residents of Duluth’s Park Point gathered this week to air concerns about rising property values and taxes — worries that have grown in the wake of billionaire Kathy Cargill’s high-profile purchases of several homes in the neighborhood.
