Trooper's charges test new law + solar snow fence

Coming up on Morning Edition: Charges against a Minnesota State Patrol trooper who fatally shot a motorist last July could test a state law revised in the wake of George Floyd’s killing. Supporters of the changes argued that the previous language of the law made it too easy for officers to avoid accountability when they took someone’s life. Phillips looks past South Carolina on rocky presidential race path. If Dean Phillips hopes to make a splash in the Democratic presidential primary, even he knows that South Carolina won’t be the place. Ahead of Saturday’s official leadoff to his party’s nominating season, the Minnesota congressman has all but moved on. Xcel Energy proposes to keep operating nuclear plants until early 2050s. The utility also proposed adding new wind and solar energy and battery storage. It also calls for adding more “always available” energy — likely natural gas — to provide backup electricity during times of peak demand. Memorial honors 39 Minnesotans killed by intimate partner violence in 2023. They were from small towns and big cities. They were just a few days old to 77 years old. Rich, poor. Black, white. Gay, straight. All of them killed in an act of domestic violence. Violence Free Minnesota, which put on the memorial event, is working to end relationship violence. George Morrison’s legacy honored by new Indigenous arts center at the U of M. Gichigami, or Lake Superior, is prominently featured in much of Morrison’s artwork. A central artistic element in his work is the horizon, inspired by the lake. Many attribute Morrison’s use of the horizon line to his upbringing along the North Shore. Art Shanty Projects closes due to warm weather. Six days after opening on the ice of Lake Harriet in Minneapolis, and after receiving 10,000 visitors, the Art Shanty Projects is shutting down.
