Trucking shortage, local business losses

Coming up on Morning Edition: Scores of Minnesota businesses that managed to make it through the pandemic did so by changing the way they do things. Some reduced hours, others closed for one or two days a week. As Mark Zdechlik reports, many of those pandemic pivots remain in place because of on-going worker shortages.

| | Ag industry testing driverless trucks to solve labor shortage
| A sugar beet cooperative in western Minnesota and eastern North Dakota is turning to autonomous trucks to solve a driver shortage. Minn-Dak Farmers Cooperative says the trucks can make the company more efficient. Minnesota law currently allows platooning of trucks only on freeways or expressways with a permit from the Department of Transportation. A MnDOT spokesperson said a change in state law will be needed to allow the trucks on other highways. | |

| Minnesota’s unemployment rate has been around 3 percent or lower for 24 consecutive months, which is among the longest stretches on record. Oriane Casale, assistant director of the Labor Market Information Office for the Department of Employment and Economic Development, said the most recent data shows two openings for every unemployed worker. That’s the sign of a challenging environment for employers, she said. | |
