Coming up on Morning Edition: Minneapolis now has its second commissioner of public safety, overseeing police, fire, 911 and emergency management. Former Hennepin County Chief Judge Todd Barnette was sworn into the job this month with near-unanimous approval from the city council. His predecessor, Cedrick Frazier, left after less than a year. Barnette is inheriting some baggage as the Minneapolis Police Department is under investigation for alleged discrimination and overuse of force. The Commissioner joins Cathy Wurzer to talk about his new role at 8:30 a.m. on Morning Edition.

A judge has ordered a former Minneapolis police officer to report to the Hennepin County workhouse next week to begin serving a 15-day sentence for kicking and punching a man in 2020.
Justin Stetson pleaded guilty to assaulting Jaleel Stallings in the week after George Floyd’s murder. In just three years, Jaleel Stallings has experienced Minnesota’s justice system not only as a criminal defendant and a plaintiff in a civil lawsuit, but also as a victim.
“I can’t escape the fact that the system that I believe was designed to provide justice to citizens protected my attacker, but not me,” Stallings said in testimony at Stetson’s sentencing hearing on Monday. | |

Judge rejects plea deal in fatal carjacking case. A Hennepin County District Judge rejected a plea deal Monday afternoon that would have given a man accused of taking part in a fatal attempted carjacking five years of probation.
