Protest at Stillwater prison, Rochester bets on geothermal
A storm system and cold front will advance slowly across Minnesota on Tuesday. There is a slight (level 2 of 5) risk of severe storms in the afternoon and evening from the Duluth area to the Twin Cities and southwest to around Fairmont. Get the latest weather news on Updraft. đïžComing up on Morning Edition: Since June, construction workers in Rochester have been drilling deep wells that will eventually be linked to a geothermal network. The wells are part of Rochester's strategy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 100% over the next three decades. Geothermal systems aren't an option for every city, but in locations that have the right geologic conditions, it's a climate-friendly way to heat and cool buildings. MPR News reporter Catharine Richert brings us the story. đ§ Coming up at 9 a.m.: Starting this school year, students across Minnesota will have both breakfast and lunch provided to them at no charge. The program will cost the state of Minnesota close to $400 million in the first two years. MPR News host Angela Davis talks about what this means for families and kids with Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan, an organization advocating to end hunger in Minnesota and a nutrition services director from a school district in Mankato. We want to hear from you, too. When you were a kid, did your family qualify for free or reduced lunch? Do you have a child whoâs in school now? What do you think about meals now being free for everyone? Call us at 651-227-6000 or 800-242-2828 during the 9 a.m. hour.

| | Demonstrators call for investigation into conditions inside Stillwater state prison | Dozens of people gathered outside the Minnesota Correctional Facility-Stillwater Monday to protest living conditions inside the prison. The gathering followed a peaceful protest put on by close to 100 incarcerated people on Sunday to decry reduced shower, phone and recreation time, as well as dangerously hot rooms and poor water quality. Protesters outside the front of the facility carried signs reading âDecarcerate MNâ and âMy dad deserves water.â They stood at a gate outside the building and shouted âWe hear you, we see you, we love you, weâre with you,â as inmates inside shouted and whistled in response.

| | Rochester bets on geothermal to power a green future | When Kevin Bright looks past the wire fencing and upturned soil in front of Rochester City Hall, he sees a greener future. The two geothermal wells being drilled here will eventually provide carbon-free heating and cooling for the cityâs headquarters. The wells are one part of the cityâs strategy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 100 percent over the next three decades. âAfter itâs completed and the projectâs done, weâll have the second city hall in Minnesota that is electrically heated and cooled with geothermal, which is pretty exciting,â he said.
