Diabetes boost: More than $12 million will be spent improving diabetes care in the Hunter New England region. The money, donated by philanthropic group the Colonial Foundation, will be put towards a mobile MediBus developed by the Hunter Medical Research Institute to transport specialist diabetes teams to rural communities. Council will vote on a motion tonight, calling on the state government to urgently review the management of vegetation in river and creek beds. NRLW semis: The Knights defeated St George Illawarra 30-8 in the final round of the regular season on the Central Coast on Sunday. The two teams will meet again this Sunday in the semi-final, with the winner to advance to the grand final. Mental health stats: Upper Hunter mental health education group Where There's A Will says there needs to be a renewed focus on mental wellbeing education for young children, in light of staggering census statistics. Data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics shows 13 per cent of people living in Maitland, 12.4 per cent in Newcastle and 9.5 per cent in the Upper Hunter have a diagnosed mental health condition, well above the state average of 8 per cent. Pickers win… again! The champion-vibes remain in Maitland, with the Pickers rugby team inching closer to the President's Cup after a commanding 52-6 win against the Forbes Magpies. They're now preparing to take on the Hills Blues in the final on Sunday. The organisation has tabled a strategic plan to expand its community programs and recruit more doctors over the next three years. Anyone in the market for a hospital? | | | We're sorry but the sunshine isn't going to last. You'll need to have the brolly and the raincoat on standby today, especially if you're in the Upper Hunter. The rain will hit most likely in the afternoon and evening and could even develop into a thunderstorm in some parts of our region. The wet weather looks like it'll stick around for the remainder of the week, and the top temperatures will only reach the low to mid 20's. Our Upper Hunter Brekkie host Amelia Bernasconi snapped this pic of glowing gold canola crops on the outskirts of Merriwa. | Check the seven-day forecast for your town |
