You may not know it, but the Parliamentary Archives is an absolute treasure trove of LGBTQ+ records dating back centuries. Yep, we’re talking aaaalll the way back to the Tudors, where – perhaps unexpectedly – it’s possible to encounter attitudes to queer identity. This month, UK Parliament is running two free, fascinating talks which delve into these archives and look into the future. The series kicks off tomorrow (February 18, 6pm), with Winchester School of Art: reviving LGBT+ history. For this project, UK Parliament opened up its archives to art students and asked them to create work responding to LGBTQ+ legislative history. In this talk, they’ll present them. We’re really looking forward to Ellie’s project on the core values of Pride – which, as we know, has strayed pretty far from its beginnings as a protest. Using powerful, joyful and eye-opening photos of the first Pride events, Ellie asks, ‘how can we bring back the voice Pride once had?’. Bit of a history buff? Check out the second talk on Thursday February 25 at 6pm, LGBT+ histories from the Palace of Westminster. Here, a knowledgeable tour guide will tell the stories of Edward II, who is partly remembered for his bond with Piers Gaveston; and Henry VIII, who passed the Buggery Act in 1533 that made ‘unnatural practices’ punishable by death.
