You’re Paying 400% More for the Same Pill | | Dear e-Alert Reader, Imagine this… You and a friend both need the same life-saving medication. You live in Florida. She lives in France. You both get the exact same prescription from the exact same manufacturer. But here’s the catch—you’re paying 400% to 1,300% more for it. Why? Because you live in the United States. And in America, Big Pharma runs the show. (Article continues below.) |

According to new research from RAND and the Commonwealth Fund, Americans pay over three times more for prescription drugs than citizens in 33 other wealthy countries—even after rebates are factored in. Take a look at GLP-1 drugs like Ozempic or Wegovy, which have exploded in popularity for weight loss and diabetes. In Europe, these drugs are expensive—but in the U.S., they can cost up to 13 times more. This isn’t about supply or quality. It’s about corporate greed. While millions of Americans are forced to ration medications or skip refills altogether, pharmaceutical giants are raking in record profits—and paying shockingly little in taxes. In 2022, Big Pharma paid an average 10% in taxes. In 2023? They actually got refunds. And it gets worse. Those inflated prices aren’t just hurting individuals. They’re draining Medicare and Medicaid, too—two programs that account for roughly 22% of federal spending. Translation? You’re paying twice: once at the pharmacy, and again through your tax dollars. Even if you never fill a prescription, you’re footing the bill. The American people aren’t fooled. A 2024 poll by the Kaiser Family Foundation found that nearly 90% of Republicans, 84% of Democrats, and 78% of Independents all agree: Big Pharma greed is driving high drug costs. This is not a partisan issue. It’s a pocketbook issue. And it’s personal. Because it’s not just the price of insulin or heart meds that’s skyrocketing. Some life-saving drugs have jumped in price by as much as 5,000% over the last decade. All while Big Pharma spends millions lobbying against price controls and accountability. What can you do? Support Medicare price negotiations. Drugmakers fought tooth and nail to block this—but public pressure is forcing change. Ask your doctor about affordable alternatives. Many natural remedies and generics offer safer, lower-cost options. Don’t fall for the latest drug fad. GLP-1s, SSRIs, statins—these are multi-billion dollar industries, not miracle cures. And most importantly? Demand transparency. Demand reform. Demand better. Because the next time you pick up a prescription, remember: someone in Spain or Sweden is getting that same pill for a fraction of the cost. It’s time we stop playing by Big Pharma’s rules. Truth is the best medicine—especially when the price is this high, Rachel Mace Managing Editorial Director, e-Alert with contributions from the research team P.S.
