The Weekender is a special collaboration between OZY Tribe members near and far to provide delicious recommendations for your valuable weekend time, as we grapple with turbulent times in America.

what to watch

1. The Carlos Watson Show

Bold. Smart. Curious. The Carlos Watson Show is your newest "can't miss" show from OZY. Host Carlos Watson brings a new breed of talk, getting real and deep with the voices you need to know to make sense of this important moment. What does Sean Spicer think of Black Lives Matter? Will Terry Crews apologize for his recent tweets? What's the shared experience that brings one particular vice presidential sleeper pick close to Joe Biden? Find out this and more when you watch the #CarlosWatsonShow, airing this Monday. Subscribe for free on OZY's YouTube channel.

2. Batman: Under the Red Hood

This week marked the 10th anniversary of this criminally underrated chapter of the Batman franchise. Bonus for fans of Supernatural: Jenson Ackles plays the leading non-Batman role of Jason Todd. You can watch it on YouTube for $3.

3. Nagi-Asu: A Lull in the Sea

This coming-of-age Japanese anime series depicts a world split between land and sea civilizations — and the hijinks that ensue when some sea-dwelling middle schoolers have to seek an education on land. It all hits Netflix this weekend.

what to eat

1. Homemade Quesadillas

You don’t have to be a whiz in the kitchen to enjoy your favorite restaurant foods. Take quesadillas. With nothing but some tortillas, cheese, fresh pepper and expert guidance, you’ll have an Applebee’s-worthy meal.

2. Vegetarian Chicken Sandwich

Next time you’re in Chicago’s Hyde Park, swing by Black-owned vegan restaurant Can’t Believe It’s Not Meat for this loaded sandwich. With crispy breading and cheese to match, this is one cheat meal you won’t regret.

3. Belizean Fry Jacks

These easy breakfast breads are native to the Caribbean but are most popular in Belize. Having guests over this weekend? Indulge them by frying up a batch of this starch-heavy snack, topped with fruit and honey.

4. Vegan Lentil Jamaican Patties

This one might take some time, but if you’re in the mood for a new recipe, this is a great one. First, get your hands on some plant-based pie dough. Then it’s just a matter of boiling your lentils, preparing your veggies and seasoning. While Jamaican pies are traditionally filled with meat, this is a light and healthy alternative.

what to play

1. Buzzed

As you might guess from the name, this drinking game has no reservations about getting you sloshed. Once you draw and read the card, the individuals who fit the prompt’s description — whether it’s liking pineapple on pizza or having played a varsity sport — must take a shot. You can also play an app version.

2. Enormous Outside Jenga

You know how to play, but at this size it’s a whole new game. The blocks aren’t big enough that they’ll force you to social distance, but they’ll certainly help you remember to do so while you’re playing on the lawn with your friends.

3. $#!% Happens

We all intimately understand the name of this game just from surviving seven months of 2020, but it’s a bit more complex than that. In this card game, players have to place a series of awful situations in order from bad to worse, and win points for how well their answers match up to the responses of the expert panel tapped by the game’s designers. Hey, it could even give you some perspective on this trash year.

what to download

1. 3Fun

Lockdown was really boring, so perhaps it’s no surprise that — at least according to this threesome-focused dating app — there’s been a surge of interest in online swinging. Despite the name, this app is for all kinds of swinging, not just the tricycle.

2. Triller

This short-video platform actually debuted before TikTok — but was soon overshadowed by the behemoth. Still, with TikTok banned in some countries and on thin ice in others, it could be time to make a switch.
