The Martin Luther King Jr. holiday on January 18th marks the 26th anniversary of the Day of Service that celebrates the civil rights leader’s birthday, his life, and his legacy.

Observed each year on the third Monday in January as “a day on, not a day off,” this year the Presidential Inauguration Committee of President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris has formally joined the National Day of Service on MLK Jr. Day.

Earlier this month, the Biden Inaugural Committee announced they will “partner with service leaders, community members, and local, state and national organizations across the country to organize events that will unite Americans around service in their communities.” Events will focus on COVID-19 relief, and address challenges that have been exacerbated by the pandemic, such as poverty, hunger, racial injustice, homelessness, mental health and racial disparities.

The MLK Day of Service inspires hundreds of thousands of Americans to come together to serve their community. Strong, empathetic leaders like Joe Biden and Kamala Harris understand the need to empower individuals, strengthen communities, build bridges, address social problems, and to move us closer to Dr. King's vision of a "Beloved Community."

Traditionally, the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) and the King Center lead the MLK Day of Service in partnership with numerous national nonprofit organizations, faith-based and community groups, state service commissions, and other government agencies. A number of pandemic-safe service events are posted on the Biden Inaugural website, and you can find an event happening in your area here.

The Democratic Party of Oregon is coordinating an “Oregon Stock the Shelves” event this weekend, and is asking Oregonians across the state to donate high-need food and hygiene items to food banks in their communities.
