Yanko Design - Form Beyond Function |
An Invisible, Innovative, Immortal Bottle Opener Posted: 07 Mar 2018 09:50 AM PST Beautifully designed and brilliantly named, the Jo bottle opener needs no additional branding. Designed with a form that literally spells Jo (short for “Just Open”. A stroke of genius I’d say), the bottle opener comes made in titanium and is small enough to easily fit into your keychain and your life and dramatically uplift both. As a product designer, there’s a lot to love about Jo. The choice of material is just perfect. Its small size may have you asking questions about its efficiency, but when something’s made from Grade 5 Titanium, you can forget about lifespan because it’ll probably outlive you. The Jo’s shape is pretty darn innovative too. The designer’s ability to integrate the name of the product into the form (or vice versa) means that product and brand are now both one. Not to mention the fact that Jo stands for Just Open, reinforcing the product’s function. The Jo can be divided into two parts. The J, which serves as a nifty bottle opener, and the O, which allows you to slide the Jo into any keyring. At just 22x15mm in size and 2mm in thickness, the Jo is smaller than most keys, and can literally slide even into your wallet if you chose. One of the best EDCs to have on you, the Jo is great for impromptu get-togethers or house parties where you’ve got a line of people waiting to use the one bottle opener that’s around, or worse, using counter-tops or their mouth to crack open their beers. Simple, small, useful, innovative, memorable, and pretty much invincible, the Jo embodies all the ideals of good product design and good EDC! Designer: Ivan Umolac |
Posted: 07 Mar 2018 08:10 AM PST Literally… it blows and sucks! As more urban-based companies lean toward work-from-home policies, so does the need to have better indoor air quality at home. Designed with this in mind, Fan Tone by designer Hyojeong Lee is an interesting twist on the ceiling fan that does double duty as an indoor air cleaner that rids your home of harmful particles. It can easily replace any existing fan or installed as a new fixture as it integrates into any standard electrical system. The unit utilizes a HEPA filter system and directly targets air where it matters most. Its fan system also ensures air is circulated for more comprehensive cleaning that stretches beyond room boundaries. It’s also equipped with wireless connectivity so it can relay information to a smartphone app that will give you real-time air quality stats. This also means it can work in tandem with any smart climate control system to provide more efficient cooling during summer months. No one would blame you for not wanting a big, bulky, asymmetrical object as the focal point of your room… but the idea of combining ceiling fans with air-cleaning tech is long overdue! Posted: 07 Mar 2018 05:03 AM PST I’m a bit surprised to see a fashion-inspired humidifier, but I can’t say I’m not liking it! Designed for Diesel, the Reborn humidifier lacks the medical-product look of many other existing designs. Instead, it has a metal and glass material combination that looks more sculpture than appliance. In keeping with the Diesel brand identity, it has a sort of rugged, high-end, industrial vibe that blends in perfectly in any loft space or man cave. Designer: Büşra Özcan |
A New Vision for Bang and Olufsen Posted: 07 Mar 2018 03:00 AM PST Though it’s inspired by consumer electronics maker Bang & Olufsen, this design by Mason Day doesn’t have anything to do with listening. Instead, it’s all about what you can see… and see FAR at that! The telescope applies the same Danish-cool design language and the result is nothing but sculptural. Not only beautiful, the tabletop design is also simplistic and intuitive to use. Simply drop an eye to the lens and use the button on the base to zoom in and out. Designer: Mason Day |
This cool-stool makes sitting healthy! Posted: 06 Mar 2018 05:00 PM PST With the dynamism of a Stability Ball packaged in the form factor of a stool, the Ovini Balance Stool relies on a hemispherical cushion and a series of ball bearings to give you a seat that allows you to shift and adjust your sitting angle to keep your spine active and engaged. The innovative piece of furniture uses a ring of bearings and an upturned metal dome to allow you to not only shift your seating angle but also rotate 360° in your position, giving you a kind of freedom you wouldn’t expect in most regular chairs, leave alone stools. The metal dome also comes with a rubber cord that connects the seat to the bottom of the stool, making sure the cushion doesn’t go rogue on you and do a full 180. The stool’s ability to let the seater adjust their angle makes it a much healthier alternative to most chairs. It keeps your body in constant motion and helps to maintain the natural curvature of human lumbar. Not to mention it looks like the most fun seating device ever! I call dibs! A super-slim stand that’s as smart as your phone! Posted: 06 Mar 2018 03:14 PM PST Simple, elegant, and effective, the SnapWings sit like a flat strip on your phone, until you press the magic button and the wings pop out, giving your mobile phone a rather useful stand, allowing you to Facetime, watch videos, or do pretty much anything else you’d want to do with your phone propped up. The SnapWings uses the same phenomenon/mechanism as the YoYo self rolling yoga mats. Its size and universal design allow it to stick to the back of any phone, and its slick design provides the features of a propstand in a format that makes it the world’s slimmest phone stand (not to mention it’s much better looking than those hideous O-ring phone stands), allowing it to slide in and out of your pocket with sheer ease. To get the wings back to their flat position, just press down on both ends and the SnapWings reverts to its flat shape and use your phone like you normally would because you don’t have a massive metal ring stuck to the back of your phone. The SnapWings are useful when you need them, and virtually undetectable when you don’t! Designer: Dave Lemberg |
People who live in glass prefab cabins… Posted: 06 Mar 2018 01:00 PM PST This cabin in the woods hides in plain sight, thanks to the use of one-way mirrors. Aptly named the Disappear Retreat, not only because it feels invisible, but it also helps you disappear for a while, the 83 sq.ft. retreat blends into any surrounding and leaves minimal impact on the environment. The cabin comes with a near zero footprint, with a spotted thin-film PV in the south glass wall that’s capable of harnessing solar energy to make sure the insides of the cabin are always temperate. Designed to be your bubble in the woods, the cabin is near-invisible to the human eye, although animals may be able to spot it (since the mirrors are coated with a UV coating, and animals see UV but we don’t), which can only be a good thing because you wouldn’t want reindeer colliding into your glass cabin. The prefab cabin is large enough to easily accommodate 1-2 occupants and is absolutely remarkable on the inside, allowing you to literally surround yourself by the woods thanks to its one-way mirror construction. Even the skylight on top gives you a marvelous view of the starry skies as you immerse yourself in what might be just the most ultimate wanderlust experience! Designer: Coulson |
