Yanko Design - Form Beyond Function |
Posted: 01 Mar 2018 12:00 PM PST Nothing about the Drip says “appliance for your mundane kitchen”. This incredibly sculptural coffee machine looks more like a trophy for professional excellence than a coffee brewing apparatus. Made almost entirely from aluminum, the Drip’s forms are stylized to look elegant and savvy. Pair it with the microtextured matte black and polished gold color/finish combination and you’ve got something truly remarkable looking. Besides the colors black and gold almost celebrate the hues of coffee too! The concentric ripple designs on both upper and lower elements look like ripples, and I honestly feel ashamed to put my boring white mug on the platform to have the brew pour directly into it. In fact the Drip’s aesthetic is so remarkably dazzling, looking at it does a better job of awakening my senses than actually drinking the coffee! The Drip Coffee Stand is a winner of the Red Dot Product Design Award for the year 2017. Designer: Joseph Lee Emerson for Lyfe Inc. |
Posted: 01 Mar 2018 10:40 AM PST Dreading your next visit to the gyno for your pap smear?! Nobody, and I mean nobody, blames you. Have no fear, Domi Care is here! This DIY pap smear device makes it possible for just about anyone with lady parts to take care of business from the comfort of home. This at home pap test works a lot like one of those genetic testing services like 23 and Me, only it’s for detecting pre-cancerous cells. Following similar steps to inserting a tampon, one can take a sample in seconds. Then, with a smartphone app, users can track their test progress, access the results and even communicate directly with their doctors. It’s great not only for those who are uncomfortable at the office, but also for women who typically wouldn’t have access to a primary care physician. Domi Care won first place in the 2018 International Housewares Association Student Design Competition. Designers: Anastasia Miller and Lauren Emmerson The current pap test environment does not promote a comfortable state of being. Statistically a quarter of the population suffers from White Coat Syndrome. WCS is anxiety related to doctor’s office visits, which subsequently can lead to affected test results. While developing Domi Care we recognized the importance of making an easy to use test to mitigate user error. With this in mind, we created a similar form factor to a tampon, as this is something that most users are familiar with. Along with developing Domi Care itself, we developed an app that would look to solve many of the anxiety issues surrounding a pap test. |
Posted: 01 Mar 2018 06:00 AM PST Walk into my house and you’ll see my helmet lying somewhere on the floor of my living room. I’ve got no other place to keep it! It occupies too much real estate on tabletops, and doesn’t really fit on the coat-hanger, so the only option I have is to have it resting on the floor somewhere. Marc Graells, the designer of the Halley Helmet Stand had a similar disposition. “I was fed up with spending money on my helmet to then have it hidden in a cupboard or torn by a traditional hook. I take pride in my bike and my helmet on the road and I wanted to bring that into my home. I was looking at the racks out there but nothing met my expectations, I wanted something functional that would look after my helmet but also stylish.”, he said. The Halley displays your helmet in full glory, while making sure its spherical resting area doesn’t damage the inner lining of the helmet. Made to look like a decorative element without the helmet, but recede into the background and let the helmet shine when placed on it, the Halley Helmet Stand knows when to look aesthetic, and when to be functional. And it’s so much better than storing your helmet in your cupboard… or keeping it on the floor (who, me?). Designer: Halley Accessories |
Posted: 01 Mar 2018 12:05 AM PST Did you know that dew is one of the few ways to collect safe drinking water in the wilderness?! In the urban jungle, however, DEWDROP is the safest! Inspired by the majestic look of morning dew that collects on a leaf, the aptly named DEWDROP provides an elegant source of purified water in any kitchen interior. Its unassuming spout mimics the form of a blade of grass weighed down by fresh dew. This abstract replication is enhanced by graphics on the surface that look similar to the veins on a leaf. Minimalistic touch-and-tap controls allow for intuitive temperature setting and glass size specification. Its slender form and small footprint make it ideal for maximizing counter space in compact living spaces. Designer: Hyun Yeol Shin |
A Fire Mask That’s As Easy as Swallowing a Pill Posted: 28 Feb 2018 09:20 PM PST Most deaths in a fire incident don’t occur because of burning or heat, rather, they occur because of smoke inhalation. Despite this being the cause of 80% of fire deaths, not nearly as much attention is given to breathing apparatuses as fire extinguishers. If you can’t breathe, how could you even operate one? The Emergency Escape Filter provides an easier and more convenient solution than standard masks thanks to its compact size and innovative filtration functionality. In the event of a fire hazard, its capsule shape can extend to reveal a clip which can be placed directly inside the nose. This creates an immediate link between the user’s airways and the inner filtration tech. Small and lightweight, it’s sure to stay in place and unlike other bulky masks, won’t get in the way while you’re trying to fight back the fire or make your way to escape. Designer: Hyun Yeol Shin |
A tabletop time-tuning turbine Posted: 28 Feb 2018 04:00 PM PST With its jet-engine-meets-Lovegrove style, the Versa Neo sits on your desk, charging your automatic watch by spinning it around. Its compact size and elegant design let it fit on your workdesk, or even by your bed on the bedside table. The winder is capable of winding your watch with both clockwise and anticlockwise motions… much like a washing machine for your timepieces. The Neo comes with controls that allow you to decide how many turns your watch needs per day, and unlike most watch winders, it always makes sure it brings the rotation to a stop exactly when the watch is vertical again, allowing you to read the time without having to tilt your head. Yes, it looks incredibly elegant and posh. No, it doesn’t dry your handkerchiefs. Designer: Versa |
Let sunlight be your wallpaper! Posted: 28 Feb 2018 12:00 PM PST “I want a house where I can feel the sky” sounds more like poetry than a design brief, but then again, the resulting product also feels like visual poetry rather a regular skylight. Built by Satoh Hirotaka Architects to let the sky paint the insides of your house, the Message From The Sky is an interactive skylight that changes with time and weather, turning your wall into a piece of art that’s seldom the same. Based on the season, time of the day, cloud cover, precipitation, and general color of the sky, the house’s wall looks completely different. Pair it with the moving slats that create mesmeric parallelogram patterns and you’ve got a room that’s beautifully decorated by sunlight! I can just see myself reaching for the Instagram icon!
