Yanko Design - Form Beyond Function |
Posted: 04 Dec 2017 09:00 AM PST Unimpressed by the sterile vibe of existing wheelchair models, designers Hoyoung Youn, Sungyub Lee, and Jiyoon Han looked to Barcelona’s Dosnovento bicycle brand as inspiration for their Infinito mobility concept. The design first tackles the stigma wheelchair users face with an entirely new aesthetic and form. With a sporty silhouette and large go-anywhere wheels, the new look is more rover-like than wheelchair. Fun, vibrant color details mimic that of Dosnovento fixie collection. The new design also enhances mobility thanks to its scissor-inspired structure. It sports an innovative adjustable seat-height feature for better ergonomics. It also has two distinct riding positions: one that is ideal for cruising and maneuvering and the other for putting the user at eye level with standing individuals. This in combination with a safety features like 6-point buckling and a gyroscopic stabilizer give users the confidence and independence they so desire. The Enchanted Coloring Book that Comes to Life! Posted: 04 Dec 2017 07:00 AM PST Children love to live in the world of make-believe. They do this so that they can live a life they dream of or bring their creative visualizations to reality. However, with a generation completely shifting to being addicted by gadgets and screens, we’re seeing an increase in children turning into consumers rather than creators… and this in turn affects their creative instincts. Playing House 2 strikes a balance between encouraging a child to create, while sticking to a medium the child is comfortable with, i.e., the smart-device. Making use of Augmented Reality to help superimpose a child’s imagination over the world around him/her, the Playing House 2 encourages a child to be creative and proactive by bringing their creations to life! The Playing House 2 comes as an exhaustive kit that uses print media as well as cutting edge AR and VR technology to bring a child’s imagination to life! Available in five different kits, each kit enables children to develop language skills, hand-eye coordination, build in VR, and watch their creations come to life using AR technology. The coloring book comes as an integral part of the kit. Using technology that turns 2D colored projects into 3D models (something Disney has been working on extensively too), the coloring book turns the child’s creations into something lifelike, giving them the joy of seeing their imagination turn to reality! The Playing House 2 even comes with a hologram machine that uses a transparent pyramid to create 3D living holograms of the child’s creations, pushing them to experiment and create more, while rewarding them by bringing their art to life. The kit even comes with a VR building app that allows kids to turn to interior decorators, building their ideal bedroom, study, or kitchen using the objects that they colored from the book and placing them in a 3D environment! Playing House 2 aims at creating an interest in children to participate in the creation process. Rather than most learning apps that reduce a child’s activity to button pushing, the Playing House 2 builds a bridge between physical and digital, using the digital aspect to enrich the physical activity of coloring. It pushes children to keep creating, while introducing them to technologies like AR and VR which will dominate their lives in the future, truly helping them understand technology without becoming a slave to it. The Playing House 2 aims at retaining a child’s imaginative abilities, building a generation of makers and creators! The Basic Bic Just Got Better! Posted: 04 Dec 2017 05:11 AM PST Bic is the timeless go-to writing utensil for writers, designers, teachers and students, but the brand has yet to venture into making other office supplies. This concept not only expands on Bic’s famous line of pens, but transforms them into multifunctional tools that should belong in any creative’s toolkit! The new design ditches the “pen-only” idea and reimagines the body as a structural base for many different tools instead of a traditional cap. This is how Bictools was born! With peripheral add-ons, it can instantly switch from ballpoint to compass, ruler, scalpel, a paper bender, or other various gadgets. The click-on/click-off feature saves time, space and the need for multiple larger tools. The tool caps are easy to replace and even easier to expand your collection! Designer: Juan Carlos Fanes |
Posted: 04 Dec 2017 12:00 AM PST Virtual reality… how could something so cool look so uncool?! Until now, that is. Introducing, Givenchy VR, also known as Ombré. Taking on VR would be a foray for any fashion house, but for some reason Givenchy seems to be the brand of choice for designers considering it’s one of a couple of Givenchy VR concepts floating around. Here, the brand’s signature gothic style is introduced to the goggle. While there’s no word on materials, its chiseled form is distinctly different from existing clunky designs. Instead of looking like you glued a TV remote to your face, you’ll be rocking a ready-to-wear accessory that looks right off the runway. Designer: Se Hyeon Won for PDF HAUS |
Posted: 03 Dec 2017 06:37 PM PST The year is 2017 and NASA have just reinvented the wheel. Glenn Research engineers have just unveiled a new super-elastic tire constructed from nickel titanium, a shape memory alloy able to flex, conform, and then return to its original shape even after traversing the most punishing of terrains. This exciting new tire comes in anticipation of the Mars 2020 launch/expedition. This new tire is an evolution of the original Spring tire which was used on the 1971 Lunar Rover, brought to Mars as part of the Apollo 15 mission. The hope with these new tires is that they enable the rovers to explore more significant and larger regions of Mars or the moon for extended periods of time, have the ability to carry heavier payloads, and eventually, quite possibly, be used on manned exploration vehicles that would move at much higher speeds. Now I’m waiting for these wheels to make it to the Offroading Sports Industry! Designer: NASA & Glenn Research |
