The Key to Never Getting Locked Out Posted: 27 Sep 2017 03:07 PM PDT Getting locked out is a thing of the past. Growing up, I can’t tell you how many times I lost the keys to my house. Smart Door alleviates the stress and nuisance of using a key to enter the home. Designed to appeal to the younger generation of homeowners, Smart Lock is beautifully designed to welcome home the creative inside you. The overall design aesthetic is simple and minimal, ensuring it does not evade the look of the front door – not limiting the Smart Lock to a specific environment. The material combinations are complementary – the exterior showing an anodized aluminum in either a rose gold or space grey finish while the interior is a ribbed, powder coated ABS, soft to the touch for a premium feel and experience. The Smart Lock is simple in design and simple in usage. To begin usage, raise the top of the handle up to uncover the pin pad and fingerprint scanner. Once the lock is disabled, the door can be opened via the lower handle. This is done on a push or pull system depending on the orientation of the door itself. To prevent and full lockouts due to an electrical fault, there is an emergency keyhole in the base of the handle, discoverable by sliding down a cover. Designer: 10^N Design |
Hot Flashes Are No Match For Cool Tech Posted: 27 Sep 2017 11:00 AM PDT Grace is the latest in wearable tech that explores how the trend might combat undated menopausal hot flashes. During a hot flash, the thermoregulatory system is falsely triggered and acts to lose heat. This causes sweating, a rise in heart rate, shortness of breath and a reddening of skin. Besides being a deeply uncomfortable experience, it is also embarrassing and inconvenient, striking at any time – day or night. The underside of the face is equipped with sensors capable of detecting the onset of a hot flash up to one minute before it strikes. If one is detected, a cooling apparatus on the other end of the device is immediately activated to help regulate the user’s thermo-receptors giving them a total sense of cooling in order to counter the hot flash. Each can be customized to the user’s aesthetic liking, such as the elegant voronoi pattern featured here. Designer: Peter Astbury |
A Camera that’s Out of this World Posted: 27 Sep 2017 07:48 AM PDT The 1-Ring Moon Levitating Smart Camera is like something out of this world – something like a moon perhaps? This smart camera defies the law of gravity by suspending in mid-air above its base. The Moon floats above the base in a graceful manner, with the ability to capture a rounded 360 degrees of imagery. The Moon is integrated with an accompanying app – yet is jam-packed with nifty technology and clever features. The Moon can instantly detect any movement in the room and rotate itself to catch the action! Not only this – the accompanying app also alerts you to the action, allowing the user to watch the action live through their smartphone. The Moon comes with a built-in microphone to add a pair of ears to those eyes, helping you when your baby cries or your dog barks. Due to the levitating nature of the Moon, the device can be removed from the base and place in any environment around the house with the use of a cradle – giving the user the ability to adapt the Moon for any room in the house. What makes the Moon a cut above the rest, is its voice recognition. This helps the Moon recognize who comes home and when they come home. The Moon Levitating Smart Camera is indeed smart – using an integrated IR blaster and Bluetooth, you can also use the Moon to control your other smart devices throughout the house all from inside the app, making it one truly smart device. Posted: 27 Sep 2017 04:13 AM PDT McLaren has just developed a carbon fiber chest shield made from F1 racing car components. The high-speed giant of car racing has developed a personalized healthcare solution for those looking to help protect their vital organs post-surgery. The wearable shield protects the rib cage as well as the vital organs – including the heart and the lungs. The shield is comprised of materials that will be used in next season’s Formula 1 car – including zylon fibers, used by all F1 teams on their cars for protection against side penetration. McLaren Applied Technologies introduced its innovative project recently calling it the Project Invincible. McLaren’s multi-material shield features high-failure strain Dyneema fibers, as used in body armor, for damage containment, and a highly-toughened resin system with woven fabrics for impact resistance. The stiff carbon fiber shield ensures flexural rigidity and load carrying capabilities where the main protection and strongest forces will be applied. McLaren Applied Technologies took an entirely holistic approach to the project, scanning the client’s body to fully understand the shape and movement needed for the best possible customized structure. The project, in its early stage, was a wearable product – integrating with the human body as a whole. With further development in the, now called, Project Invincible, the product has changed into a chest-shield, engineered to distribute the initial impact into three different load zones away from the surgery site, protecting the vital organs and central chest region. Better Air Means Better Business Posted: 27 Sep 2017 12:00 AM PDT You make choices about the restaurants, bars or stores you visit based on their locale. I mean, everybody wants to end up in a good neighborhood that’s safe and clean, right? However, we never take into consideration the air quality surrounding these places. Pure City is a concept that “commodifies” air quality to incentivize businesses to do what they can to improve air quality in their immediate areas. By implementing a large network of delicate sensors, the system can track geo-specific pollution levels in real time. Either on their phone, computer or at strategically placed stations throughout the city, users of the system can see what areas are currently plagued with pollution and make healthy choices about where to eat, drink, shop or hang out based on the air quality. In doing so, businesses will be more inclined to pitch in and work together to make eco-friendly improvements to their neighborhoods! Designer: Fynn Eckstein |
Posted: 26 Sep 2017 05:20 PM PDT Say goodbye to those sleepless nights with the LOATM Bi-Flex CPAP Mask by HSD Ventures. Unlike the many sleep apnea masks which involve tubing protruding from the front, HSD’s mask took a more discrete system of tubing. The tubing for the Bi-Flex Mask escapes from either side of the nose cup, raising itself above the user’s cheekbones and hidden behind the ears of the user and meet once again under the chin. By keeping the tubing as close to the body as possible, it alleviates the risk of dislodging the equipment, enabling the user to have a more comfortable and restful sleep. The LOATM Bi-Flex CPAP Mask has a headband in order to stabilize the mask during movement. The headband is made of a soft, breathable fabric – easy to wash and minimal irritation to the user. The mask is accented with a light blue structural support – blue being the most popular color used in medical devices due to its calming nature and does not compromise the aesthetic of the device – this not only keeps all the components together but adds a soft guide to the edges of the device itself. The Antithesis to Energy Drinks Posted: 26 Sep 2017 02:26 PM PDT Energy drinks have been all the rage since about 2003 (the future will probably not look back on this fondly) and many have forgotten that it’s just as important to calm down as it is to amp up! While drinks like Monster and Red Bull get you wound up, SLOW is a beverage that does just the opposite. It’s packed with natural ingredients that encourage you to wind down and relax. Even the packaging is designed to put you in a state of calm! Shaped like a classic hourglass, the user must only twist each side to open. Then, they can balance it over a glass to watch it gently trickle out. This serves as a visual reminder to slow down, reflect and enjoy a moment of decompression. Posted: 26 Sep 2017 01:00 PM PDT “The SoundSport Free is the closest thing to what people have always wanted in a sports headphone – a technology-packed solution that’s stripped down to just two rugged earbuds that feel great, stay connected, stay in, and sound amazing,” said Brian Maguire, director, Bose on-the-go products. What makes the SoundSport Free special is the balancing act that Bose has executed for the overall design. Engineered to fit while doing justice to performance, power, and stability, the SoundSport Free is ideal for both exercise and leisure. The SoundSport Free’s selective color choices fall in line with that of active wear – with one option being a mix of a blue edgy exterior and a bright yellow interior, while the alternative option is a complete black overview for the more discreet user. Weighing just shy of 10 grams each, the earbud is packed full of new tech worthy of making it the first truly wireless headphones by Bose. Whether your music-playback device (or phone) is 30 feet away, in your pocket, gym bag, or strapped to your arm, the new advanced antennae system allows un-paralleled connection without cracks, pops, or abrupt breaks and jumps – and for up to 5 hours. Their charging case magnetically holds the earbuds in place, doubling as a storage case and providing an additional two full charges of up to 10 hours of battery life. The icing on the cake – making these earbuds fantastic – is the “find my buds” feature on the Bose Connect App which displays the last time and place they were used to locate them quickly. With features to match any wireless earphone in today’s market, combined with Bose’s legacy of creating perhaps the most consistently brilliant audio devices, the SoundSport Free may just make you miss the headphone jack a little less!
