Yanko Design - Form Beyond Function |
Posted: 21 Jul 2016 11:32 AM PDT When it was named the BMW Radical, it was named for a reason. Radical absolutely redefines the way we perceive bikes, and in a good way! Bikes, like cars, should be (and some are) moving in a visually monolithic direction. Look at Sam’s bike in TRON: Legacy, or the Razor bike in Swat Kats, sci-fi culture is littered with large, powerful bikes with unified forms. The BMW Radical definitely adds to that culture with its monstrous design. No one is messing with the person who rides THIS set of wheels! Designer: Mehmet Doruk Erdem |

Posted: 21 Jul 2016 05:55 AM PDT Now that Pokemon Go’s here, you’re going to use that bicycle more often. And you’re also going to fall off that bicycle more often because you were trying to catch that Charizard instead of watching where you were going. AirCast’s exactly what you need for those situations, and even in general, because it’s always better to be prepared, isn’t it? AirCast, if you haven’t figured out yet, is a quick-application fracture/injury cast that can be easily worn around the injured limb. It uses air pressure to stabilize the limb while also prevent it from sustaining further injuries. Think of it as a really effective, rugged piece of bubble wrap for your shin. The AirCast’s beauty is not just in the simplicity of the solution, but also it’s rather small footprint. It fits compactly into a sleek aluminum case that one can easily attach to their bicycle. Its slim design makes sure it doesn’t become a hindrance, and also makes it an easily accessible medical boon to both amateur as well as seasoned bikers. Let’s hope we see the elegance of AirCast expand with casts for all other body parts too! Designer: Edo Kim |
Posted: 21 Jul 2016 03:00 AM PDT Dust is a major culprit of respiratory diseases but many avoid using masks and those that do tend to throw them away after a single short use. Designer Elias Thaddeus Pfuner’s recognized that poor existing design is one of the reasons behind this. Taking action, he has developed the Cyclone Mask 1 as a user-friendly, reusable option that aims to mitigate the problems of existing designs with an innovative 2 step pre-separation process as well as durability, ergonomics, and a cool striking aesthetic. The Cyclone Mask 1 utilizes a cyclone separator as a pre filter system. After the pre filter, the air is guided through a fine dust lamella filter. This lamella filter gurantees the same cross section surface while having a smaller size. During inhale a vent closes the bottom part of the cyclone. While exhaling the bottom valve opens as a result of gravity. With the help of the cyclone separation process, the durability of the filters is also improved. At the same time, the general size of the filters is reduced due to the fact that the big particles are separated during the cyclone process. Additionally, an RFID smartphone app system works in tandem with the mask to provide feedback to the user and the relay status of the used filters. The user will know when to change it and exactly how contaminated it is, which serves as an additional reminder to always wear a mask! Designer: Elias Thaddeus Pfuner

Posted: 20 Jul 2016 05:00 PM PDT Designer Radek Štěpán has conceptualized not only an innovative roadster, but an entirely new style of racing which he calls FORMUL2… and it makes F1 seem like a total snoozefest! The track idea is a hybrid consisting of half tarmac, half dirt. You can imagine the challenges and excitement that take place as drivers must switch between two completely different styles of driving. Additionally, this calls for an entirely new type of vehicle that can be modified mid-race to tackle the varying terrain. The result is a transforming racer that relies on autonomous droids to metamorphose its chassis and tires at specified pit stops between track types. Of course, this means an entirely a new wheel designed specifically for the unpredictable dirt terrain. Designer: Radek Štěpán Off-road Version On-road Version |
Posted: 20 Jul 2016 02:58 PM PDT There’s something about the Jedro deck chair that pulls me towards it. Its proportions, form, choice of color and material, all of them complement each other beautifully. The use of canvas and wood in their unconventional styles result in a chair design that is conventional at heart, but modern in terms of its visual appearance. Plus, I’m really digging the way the canvas stretches at the sides and fastens at the back like a tent! Designer: Nataša Njegovanović |
