Dear fellow South Carolinians, Thank you for subscribing to my weekly e-newsletter, and please remember to follow me on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube. Women’s History Month With the arrival of March comes the celebration of Women’s History Month. Some of the wonderful women on my staff and I took a moment last week to thank those women past, present, and future who make our world turn. You can check it out here. HBCU Second Annual Fly-In Last Tuesday, I was proud to host our Second Annual HBCU Fly-In with Rep. Mark Walker in Washington, D.C. It was great to welcome so many schools, including South Carolina State University, Claflin University, Benedict College, and Allen University. We were also happy that Google, John Deere, Wal-Mart, Bank of America, Starbucks, and McDonald’s joined us for a productive discussion on advancing opportunity and entrepreneurship. Our keynote speaker, Baltimore Raven's TE Benjamin Watson, also delivered an inspiring speech on expanding and creating opportunities. We closed the day with a bipartisan member panel, moderated by the White House’s Ja’Ron Smith. Sickle Cell Disease Research, Surveillance, Prevention and Treatment Act Last Wednesday, I introduced a new bipartisan initiative in the fight against Sickle Cell Disease the Sickle Cell Disease Research, Surveillance, Prevention and Treatment Act. There is currently no national framework in place to accurately measure the current number of Americans affected by SCD, and this new bipartisan legislation would increase efforts to collect data on the disease and reauthorize the Sickle Cell Disease Treatment Demonstration Program (SDTDP). It is critical that we understand the full breadth of what we’re facing in the fight to cure Sickle Cell Disease. This legislation marks a significant step forward in our efforts to combat Sickle Cell on all fronts research, surveillance, prevention and treatment. We owe it to those suffering every day to do everything possible to find a cure. You can read more here. Sincerely, Tim |
