Imagine being taken from your home to a far away place, and sold as a "monstrous" human "freak show". Being placed on stage almost naked, and poked and prodded by a swarm of strangers. This is what Khoisan woman Sarah Baartman endured after being taken from her home in South Africa to early 19th century London. While this may seem a distant spectre, experts argue the shadow of this abuse can be seen in the exploitation of black women's bodies today. Dive into Sarah's story from the latest episode of Stuff the British Stole with our visually rich online feature. Then, we've pulled together six interviews from the archives with pioneering Australian women artists in collaboration with the NGA's Know My Name initiative. Step back in time and hear from the iconic Margaret Olley, painter Ivy Shore, ceramicist Gwyn Hanssen Pigott, modernist Grace Cossington Smith, sculptor and "bower bird" Rosalie Gascoigne, and metal-worker Mari Funaki , who helped put Australian jewellery on the map. Finally, should men's sheds open their doors to a broader range of people? We took this contentious question to four men's sheds — here's what they reckon. Until next time, Annika Blau, RN digital editor Enjoy getting Radio National in your inbox? Forward to a friend so they can too! |
