Friend, Every Passover, my mother and I make gefilte fish from scratch using my grandmother’s recipe, and her old wooden bowl. It’s a tradition that plunges me elbow-deep into a visceral connection with my family, and the love and care that come through the generations. This year, I won't be able to stand next to my mother at the stove, and share the meal with our extended family at our seder. Instead, I’ll be cooking with them virtually before the seder, as advised by cookbook author Joan Nathan, who joined our digital conversation, Passover in a Pandemic. More than ever, I’m using The Forward as a guide to navigate the holiday this year. Our guide to online Passover shopping has helped me find things I couldn’t in stores, while these tips for a virtual Seder have given my family advice on how to do everything from incorporating technology to choosing an online haggadah. This will be an especially challenging Passover, but it is giving us an opportunity to learn and grow. Our Passover during coronavirus series offers perspectives from a wide variety of Jewish thinkers, and I've found it a comfort as we navigate the particular melancholy of being separated from those we love. We at The Forward are here to support the community through these challenges, and as a nonprofit, independent publication, we rely on our community to support us. From our family to yours, we wish you a healthy, meaningful Passover. Rachel Fishman Feddersen Publisher and Chief Executive Officer The Forward |
