Windows tip of the week

Assign the right amount of RAM for a Hyper-V virtual machine

By Ed Bott

One of the most useful features of Windows 10 Pro and Enterprise editions is the built-in virtualization platform, Hyper-V. After you've enabled the feature from Control Panel (Programs > Programs And Features > Turn Windows Features On Or Off > Hyper-V), you can create a new virtual machine (VM) by using the Hyper-V Manager console. Click New from the Actions pane on the right to get started.

The New Virtual Machine Wizard walks you through the steps, and most of the decisions are pretty straightforward. If you're not careful, though, you might inadvertently starve your host system of the resources it needs to do other work. That's because of a feature called Dynamic Memory, which allows your VM to use as much memory as it needs.

For a VM with a well-defined role, you can safely go into the settings for the VM after you create it and on the Memory page, clear the Dynamic Memory checkbox. Then set the Minimum RAM and Maximum RAM values to the same amount. That tells Hyper-V to set aside exactly that much RAM when you start the VM, so you are guaranteed no surprises.
