| | WIN this limited-edition Rostropovich LP “Rostropovich has perfected the art of cello playing.” –Dmitri Shostakovich
On this day 27 April, ten years ago, the legendary cellist and humanitarian Mstislav Rostropovich died at the age of 80. He was undoubtedly familiar with Roentgenizdat – or X-ray publishing – which became a trend in 1950s Soviet counterculture. ‘Bone music’ and ‘rock on ribs’ are two other terms that describe these bootleg recordings of music from the West, ingeniously cut onto X-ray film discarded by hospitals. This release marking ten years of Record Store Day this month bears an X-ray image of a spine and pelvis – with a 1966 recording that has its own underground history. When Rostropovich (1927-2007) was exiled from the USSR in the 1970s, a resourceful Soviet archivist saved the original tape from destruction by hiding it in a mislabeled box. It is Rostropovich’s world-premiere performance of the Cello Concerto No. 2 by his teacher and mentor Dmitri Shostakovich, recorded live in the Great Hall of the Moscow Conservatoire with the USSR State Symphony Orchestra under Evgeny Svetlanov, on the composer’s 60th birthday. This is its first ever release on LP, in a numbered, limited-edition pressing of 3,000. Warner Classics is giving away one copy. Enter the competition here by 1 May 2017 for your chance to win.

| | | The Rostropovich 10-year anniversary box set
The deluxe collectors’ box set Cellist of the Century comprises 40 CDs, 3 DVDs and a 200-page hardback book. The label was given unprecedented access to Rostropovich’s personal archive and worked closely with his daughters Elena and Olga. A number of the live performances originate from Russian tapes saved from destruction by resourceful Soviet archivists when Rostropovich was exiled from the USSR (1974-1990), and which came back to light in the late 1990s. Another highlight is the complete Bach Cello Suites, presented here in both audio and video versions. The collection also features an exclusive audio interview of Rostropovich recorded by personality Jon Tolansky.

| | Beethoven
| | This extra helping of Beethoven’s music for winds comes on the heels of Emmanuel Pahud and Les Vents Français’ triple-album WINDS & PIANO, praised by The Telegraph for “stylistically sure and interpretatively ear-catching” performances. This recording offers more of a good thing, with Beethoven grouping the winds in a variety of smaller combinations. | |

| Olivier Messiaen Edition
| Argerich, Boulez, Rattle et al
|
| Olivier Messiaen, who died 25 years ago on 27 April 1992, was the towering French composer of his time. Inspired by his deep Catholic faith and by the wonders of nature, he produced a wealth of music, richly distinctive in its harmonic language and often dazzling in its colour and complexity. The quality of his oeuvre is reflected by the roll-call of eminent performers – the composer himself among them – who appear on this 25-disc set, which includes several recordings appearing on CD for the first time. | |

This far-reaching collection of orchestral and choral works on 7CDs extends from much-loved works closely identified with Beecham to more rarely-heard pieces that he only recorded once.
