Public Sculpture Project

You're invited to support a new project created by Stephen Hayes for Cameron Art Museum, commemorating the USCT who fought in the Civil War in the Battle of Forks Road on what is now the museum's campus.

Brick pavers are available for your business or family to purchase. Make a lasting donation to this sculpture by creating a space for thousands of members of the public and school children to visit the sculpture and learn about the story of the USCT. You can purchase pavers here or by calling

Cameron Art Museum was the site of part of the Battle of Forks Road, a Civil War engagement whose victory was won by the United States Colored Troops (USCT) and led to the fall of Wilmington. Many of the 1600 African-American soldiers who fought here were native to this area and, after the war, many of them stayed to settle, raise their families, and build a community. Their impact is significant, yet their story is virtually unknown.
