Hi John!

Christmas is gaining on us!

I've been thinking a lot about change... how much it is needed and how much we resist it. I'm going to share a few of my thoughts about this.

But first...

In this week's email:

Cartoon: Why are people leaving?????
Dad Jokes: When you aren't specific in your wishes.
Video: Who matters?
A Rare Sophia: Longing
Original: Wanna share?

CARTOON OF THE WEEK

why is everyone leaving?

Why is everyone leaving?

Because people are figuring out that the Church, just because it claims special status, doesn't get a free pass.

The Church must live up to its mandate... not for US to serve IT... but for IT to serve US.

This one got over 7,800 views and over 100 comments!

deconstruction is not a movement

Deconstruction is NOT a movement.

This is an important point I keep stressing.

A Rare Sophia Original

Everybody who has followed my work for a while knows about my Sophia project. It began after I left the ministry and continued for 2 years. I drew over 60 drawings, each with their own meditations.

Almost all the originals are gone.

Strangely, I still own this one.

I call it "longing"... as a deer longs for streams of living water, so my soul longs for you.

"I WOULD SHARE MY SOLITUDE WITH YOU"

The crow showed up last in the painting... bringing it to completion.

The crow calls out. The crow says "I would share my solitude with you."

Is this you?

You're okay with solitude. But companionship in it is good too.

Especially at night.

I love the drama of this one. Don't you?

Take a Closer Look

Will You Join Your Revolution?

I remember years ago when I was the pastor of a local congregation and we were experimenting with a new kind of small group. I was going to try to create the kind of group that allowed for complete authenticity, but we were also going to practice the “no cross-talk” rule. I was going to allow people to vent or share in such a way that they would not be criticized or corrected or anything like that. I was going to create an atmosphere where we could be brutally honest and real and open.

I called it authenticity with accountability.

Let’s see how it works!

After a few weeks of this, I was feeling frustrated. We were constantly dealing with issues within the group. He had issues with her and we needed to process it. She had issues with him and we needed to talk it through. They had issues with me and we needed to figure that out. And so on and so on.

I thought to myself, “This isn’t working!”

Suddenly, one night, I realized that it actually WAS working.

I had in my mind that we would quickly work through some issues and get to this place of serenity as a group. But that was false.

I realized:

Being a community means working on being a community.

We were doing the work of what it means to be community!

It was a huge realization!

I could compare it to Lisa’s and my relationship. We are constantly communicating. Sure, we may go through periods where there’s no issues to process. But we are often talking about very important things in our relationship. All in an attempt to make it better.

The goal isn’t to fix all the bad parts and achieve a kind of perfection.

Doing the work IS the relationship.

Communicating… really trying to understand ourselves and each other and our relationship… that is the sexy part.

Because that’s what it means when free people choose to commune together. It’s figuring out… how can I be free without violating your freedom, and how can you be free without violating mine? How can I, as a free individual, enhance your life and our relationship without you needing to sacrifice your freedom and individuality.

And this takes work. All. The. Time.

So, once again, we learn all over again some wisdom that’s been around for a while… the journey is the destination.

The goal is the work!

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

I just finished reading David Sinclair’s fascinating book, Lifespan. His project, as a scientist, is to figure out how to not only slow aging, but to reverse it. If you’re into reading about health, I’d recommend this book.

At one point he talks about how some of his controversial ideas are attacked, but how this is to be expected for any scientific revolution. He mentions Thomas Kuhn’s famous classic, The Structure of Scientific Revolutions.

He writes in a way that reminds me of religious revolutions too, especially as it applies to deconstruction. It’s a long quote, so please forgive me. But it’s worth the read:

“Kuhn noted that scientific discovery is never complete; it goes through predictable stages of evolution. When a theory succeeds at explaining previously unexplainable observations about the world, it becomes a tool that scientists can use to discover even more.

“Inevitably, however, new discoveries lead to new questions that are not entirely answerable by the theory, and those questions beget more questions.Soon the model enters crisis mode and begins to drift as scientists seek to adjust it, as little as possible, to account for that which it cannot explain.

“Crisis mode is always a fascinating time in science, but one that is not for the faint of heart, as doubts about the views of previous generations continue to grow against the old guard’s protestations. But the chaos is ultimately replaced by a paradigm shift, one in which a new consensus model emerges that can explain more than the previous model.” (pp. 16ff.)

A FINAL NOTE

You are the best!

Nobody can be you. Only you can. Be the best at it. We need you.

Love to all of you out there!

Viva la revolution!

David
