The Wake Up

MONDAY, OCT. 31, 2022

I got my COVID-19 bivalent booster shot the week they came out, hoping to protect myself from another fall of surging cases and canceled plans.

I’m in a small minority though. While 7.5 million Ohioans – 67% of the population over age 5 – have started the COVID-19 vaccine shots, only about 900,000 Ohioans have received the newest booster, which protects against the newest virus variants.

We’ve so far avoided a major COVID outbreak this season, but even mild cases of COVID can result in the dreaded long COVID symptoms. Hopefully more Ohioans roll up their sleeves for boosters, along with their flu shots.

COVID-19 surge: This fall and winter could become a perfect petri dish for a new round of new, immunity-evading COVID-19 subvariants, able to thumb their noses at vaccine and natural immunity, and the new bivalent COVID-19 booster shot. This means the new subvariants might be poised to fuel a fall and winter surge in coronavirus cases across the country, reports Julie Washington.

Senate campaign: As the election nears, J.D. Vance spent his Saturday trying to consolidate votes among Ohio Republicans, while Democrat Tim Ryan worked to try to peel them off. Andrew Tobias reports that Vance appeared in Cincinnati and Wilmington with Sen. Rob Portman and Gov. Mike DeWine. We’re talking about her explanation, in which she calls herself a moron, on Today in Ohio, cleveland.com’s daily half-hour news podcast.

Statehouse and Politics

Campaign finance: Democratic Ohio Rep. Emilia Sykes outraised her Republican opponent Madison Gesiotto Gilbert by more than $100,000 in early October as they filled their campaign coffers for the final weeks leading up to the Nov. 8 election, reports Sabrina Eaton. Federal Election Commission records show Sykes collected $369,583 from Oct. 1 through Oct. 19.

Minimum wage: Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost on Friday OK’d a petition seeking to amend Article II of the Ohio Constitution and set the state’s minimum wage at $15 an hour in 2028, clearing an early hurdle in proponents’ efforts to put the amendment on the ballot. The proposal, backed by a coalition of advocacy groups called Raise the Wage Ohio, is still in the early phases in the long process of getting on the ballot, reports Laura Hancock.

Rioter sentenced: A federal judge ruled that the 30 minutes that Christine Priola of Willoughby spent inside the U.S. Capitol during the Jan. 6 riot will cost the former Cleveland schools occupational therapist 15 months in prison. Priola, 50, also agreed to pay $2,000 in restitution to the Architect of the Capitol for her share of the approximately $1.5 million in damages caused by the riot, reports Sabrina Eaton.

Police commission: Mayor Justin Bibb’s news conference to introduce his and City Council’s 13 nominees to the powerful new Community Police Commission was hurriedly cut short Friday when four framers of the charter amendment that created the commission took to the steps of City Hall in protest of the proposed membership. Courtney Astolfi reports the protesters sounded airhorns and shouted while Bibb continued to talk from the podium, circling around the mayor and commission nominees while imploring Bibb to “follow the language” of the charter amendment.

Quid pro quo? Campaign finance records show Cuyahoga County executive candidate Lee Weingart wrote a check to a business that is tied to Basheer Jones and named in an FBI subpoena, just before the former Cleveland councilman endorsed him. Kaitlin Durbin reports that on June 30, Weingart paid $10,000 for “services” from Imani Wellness, a health and wellness company that Jones has supported and fundraised for, the latest unaudited campaign finance reports show.

Land survey: The city of Cleveland and Western Reserve Land Conservancy announced on Friday that they will once again partner to survey and analyze nearly 170,000 land parcels in Cleveland, with the hopes that they will be able to identify properties in need of rehabilitation, lead abatement, code violations and demolition. Zachary Lewis reports that the last survey was done in 2015 and identified many vacant and abandoned properties later demolished.

Veiled lady: In the summer of 1909, a Plain Dealer reporter named George E. Davis went searching for a mystery at a deteriorating house near the village of Kirtland and later related what he “learned” in an overwrought Plain Dealer magazine story with the headline “The Veiled Lady of Kirtland.” A century later, Chris Quinn writes, we’ve received a request to correct it, along with versions The Plain Dealer embellished and repeated in 1940, 1970 and 2000.

Demolition: More than 800 buildings in Ohio, including 375 in Cleveland, will be demolished using state funding. Sean McDonnell reports the governor’s office announced Friday that 825 blighted and vacant structures across 30 counties would be demolished, aiming to spur economic development.

Flats East Bank: The signature building of the Flats East Bank entertainment area along the Cuyahoga River in downtown Cleveland is up for sale, with hopes of attracting close to $100 million. Sean McDonnell reports the Flats at the East Bank, which houses restaurants and 240 apartments on upper floors, is now on the market.

Medicare: Choosing the right Medicare plan can be complicated. The process requires research and patience, but there are free resources ready to lend a hand. Julie Washington reports that was the advice given by a panel of Medicare experts Thursday during The Plain Dealer and cleveland.com Guide to Medicare & Golden Retirement presented by Medical Mutual.

COVID-19 map: Cuyahoga remained yellow, for moderate COVID-19 transmission, on the latest U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention map. Julie Washington reports three Greater Cleveland counties — Medina, Portage and Summit — improved to green for low COVID-19 transmission.

Crime and Courts

Frank Q. Jackson murder: Jurors began deliberating late Friday in the trial of the man accused of setting up the September 2019 ambush murder of then-Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson’s grandson. St. Vincent carnival: Hundreds of children attended the traditional Halloween Wellness Carnival on Friday afternoon at St. Vincent Charity Medical Center in Cleveland. This was the final carnival for the hospital, as it is closing inpatient care on Nov. 15, reports David Petkiewicz.

Smashing Pumpkins: “The world is a vampire...” The iconic opening lyrics from the Smashing Pumpkins’ “Bullet with Butterfly Wings” still have the same effect they did 27 years ago, whipping the crowd into a frenzy Saturday night at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse during the “Spirits on Fire Tour.” Troy Smith reports that with hundreds of people heading to parties in downtown Cleveland dressed in costumes, perhaps there was no better band to take the stage in the middle of it all.

Spaces: Few institutional honors in the art world are bigger than being chosen by the U.S. State Department to organize an exhibition at the U.S. Pavilion at the Venice Biennale in Venice, Italy. Steven Litt reports that Spaces, a small, nonprofit art gallery on Cleveland’s West Side, has just joined that exclusive club.

Rock Hall inductions: To say the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame’s class of 2022 is loaded would be an understatement. Troy Smith and Gary Graff catch up with inductees Eminem, Dolly Parton, Duran Duran, Carly Simon, Pat Benatar and Eurythmics.
