In today's newsletter, Hudson’s Detroit Tower reaches a new milestone, how five Grand Rapids students brought guns to school and Mackinac Island named among best fall travel destinations in U.S. |
Here's one more thing to add to your fall bucket list🍎 |
There are few thing more essential to a fall activity list like heading to your local pumpkin patch or u-pick orchard. I still hold fond memories of an elementary school field trip to an orchard where a 15-foot Johnny Appleseed statue towered over us as we munched on biscuits slathered with apple butter. For your own apple picking adventure, head to the Port Oneida Historic District in Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. Orchards within the state park are blossoming with heirloom apples from trees dating back to pre-World War II farming communities. Speaking of apples, the Grand Traverse Pie company is teaming up with Pure Michigan to unveil a new pie flavor. The Pure Michigan Maple Glazed Apple Pie debuts on September 23 and will be able for purchase until December. |

Construction milestone reached at highest point of Michigan’s second tallest building |
Preserving history: The exterior of the Hudson’s Detroit Tower is now nearly complete after construction crews installed glass panels at the top of the building. Located at Woodward and Grand River in the heart of downtown Detroit, construction of the skyscraper is the largest ground-up development in the last 50 years in Detroit. The building is also the second tallest in the city. Under budget: Construction of a new multipurpose building at Kalamazoo’s Farmers Market will cost the city an estimated $1 million less than officials thought it would. The new building will house a large kitchen for classes and demonstrations, an office for youth development staff and a space for meetings, events and youth programs to be held, said Parks and Recreation Director Patrick McVerry Speaking of farmers markets: Consumers shouldn’t eat cheese made by Hickory Knoll Farms Creamery that was sold at the company’s headquarters in Onondaga or at farmers markets in Grand Rapids, Okemos and Lansing, according to a state advisory. The cheese may have been produced under unsanitary conditions without pasteurization or antibiotic testing, according to the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development. |

How 5 Grand Rapids students brought guns to school |
Four students brought guns into Grand Rapids Public Schools during the 2022-2023 school year. Then, in the spring, an eighth grade student at Alger Middle School accidentally shot his friend in the face just outside of school in a nearby city park. The incident marked the fifth time over the previous two school years that guns have been confiscated from Grand Rapids Public Schools students. Three of those five times, the gun was either loaded or, in the case of the Alger Middle School incident, had been fired. As school officials and parents continue to discuss safety initiatives, MLive/The Grand Rapids Press wanted to look closely at the five student-gun incidents that sparked the extra attention. Here is a look at what happened, beginning with the shooting outside Alger Middle School, according to schools’ Department of Public Safety and Grand Rapids Police Department reports obtained by MLive’s public records requests. Bond denied: A 15-year-old boy was arrested this week and arraigned on multiple charges after he allegedly brought a gun to school. According to WDIV-Detroit, the teen was taken into custody Monday by the school resource officer at Southfield High School for the Arts and Technology. |

Minimum wage really is rising to $12.48 an hour next year, Michigan high court affirms |
Increasing next year: The Michigan Supreme Court has responded to a request from two state departments for clarity on how to implement minimum wage increases mandated by a ruling handed down last month. According to the order, the state minimum wage will rise to $12.48 an hour on Feb. 21, 2025, to $13.29 in 2026, $14.16 in 2027 and $14.97 in 2028. Thereafter, the minimum wage would rise with inflation. Speaking out: More than 100 servers and bartenders took to the Michigan Capitol on Wednesday with a simple message for lawmakers: “save our tips.” The rally outside the building was intended to pressure lawmakers into stopping the upcoming changes to tipped wages that servers said will harm their livelihoods and the restaurant industry. Workforce: Ann Arbor City Council members introduced a new “right to sit” law this week as an update to the city’s nondiscrimination ordinance. They are calling it a fundamental human right that was historically protected in the U.S. under labor regulations in most states, ensuring workers could sit on the job as long as it did not interfere with their duties. |
