Chinese foreign policy has grown more assertive under Xi Jinping’s rule. Now, as it contains the spread of COVID-19 within its own borders, Beijing is focusing its attention abroad, from a coronavirus information campaign to a crackdown in Hong Kong that could foreshadow other regional moves. Will China, seizing an opportunity as the United States falters, claim a more expansive global role? Or will the regime crack under domestic and foreign pressure?
