 BY DOUG GRAHAM | Staff writer The East Baton Rouge Parish School Board on Thursday advanced a plan to shift the start times for six schools beginning this fall. The schools serve much of north Baton Rouge, and most carry poor ratings. A final vote on the charges is planned for June 12. The schools targeted include Capitol and Glen Oaks high schools, which would start at 8:50 a.m., 100 minutes later than they do now, and end at 4:05 p.m. Capitol, Glen Oaks Park, Melrose and Merrydale elementary schools would start at 8 a.m., 25 minutes earlier than at present, and would end at 3:15 p.m. Read about the reasoning behind the plan.
Louisiana has the third-highest rate of childhood obesity in the United States, and data from the National Survey for Children's Health show that 1 in 5 children in the state are obese.
