Why you need a platform

When I first became a writer, I felt like a fraud. Like a fake.

Who was I to tell people I, an unpublished writer, was anything other than an amateur?

Maybe you can relate.

It turns out this is actually quite normal. Steven Pressfield, in his great book The War of Art, says, “The counterfeit innovator is wildly self-confident. The real one is scared to death.”

That was me: scared to death. But I also felt like I had something to share with the world. I knew I had a message inside me. Every writer, artist, and creative I know has this. It’s almost a compulsion.

You have to share your art, or you won’t feel whole.

So I began to share my work, on my blog, all for free. And what happened next surprised me. Slowly, I began to build a small but loyal audience of readers and fans. Over time, those people began to listen to me and take my advice.

And then something really weird happened: They began asking if they could buy anything from me. That's right. Long before I wrote a book or built an online course, my audience was asking me to sell them something.

It was kind of crazy.

But then again, after seeing this happen thousands of times over and over again with various bloggers and writers, I realize it's not.

When you give away a ton of value and it begins to resonate with other people, they will want to repay you.

As my dad used to tell me while growing up in cornfields just outside of Chicago: “What goes around comes around.” Or as someone once told me at a speaking gig, “If you are stingy with the universe, then the universe will be stingy with you. But if you are generous with the universe, the universe will be generous with you.”

Generosity. It's a beautiful thing. What goes around really does come around.

The obvious benefit from this was that my work started being noticed by readers, which led to books being published and enough income that I was able to quit my job and work on my craft full time.

But the best part was not the money or the influence. And it wasn’t getting to know heroes of mine like Michael Hyatt and Seth Godin and earning six-figure book advances.

I know it sounds a little cliche, but the most rewarding part was hearing from my readers, those who had read my words and had their lives changed.

The day after publishing my first book, a reader wrote me a note telling me that one line I wrote had changed her life. ONE LINE! In a book. That’s the power of writing. That’s the power of art. That’s the power of your creative work shared with the world.
