The reason a show like "The Crown" is so fascinating is that everyone in the Royal Family, as glamorous and as powerful as they may be, is also just a person. They meet heads of state and are global celebrities, but they also struggle with insecurity, with heartbreak, with fulfilling the duties of their position. Their stories are human stories, ones that don't always go according to plan.
Have a safe and an entertaining weekend, royal watchers! 👑👑

A pretty unusual summer wedding happened in France on this week more than 400 years ago. When the man who would later become King Henri IV of France married Marguerite de Valois on Aug. 18, 1572, the biggest and most divisive issue in Europe was the rift between Catholics and Protestants. As a baby, Henri was baptized in the Catholic Church because of his Catholic father. But his father died when he was young, so his Protestant mother raised him in her tradition.
Marguerite de Valois was a Catholic, and her marriage to Henri was supposed to ease the tension between the two groups. They married at Paris's famous Notre-Dame Cathedral — or, rather, outside of it. Because Henri was a Protestant, he wasn't allowed in the building.
Just days later, on Aug. 24, thousands of Protestants were killed in the Saint Bartholomew’s Day Massacre. Henri was spared because of his Catholic wife. During his reign, he issued the Edict of Nantes, which granted religious freedom to Protestants. |
