Tribunal: Feedback on 'messy' work is not harassment

A U.K. employment tribunal has ruled that a senior HR manager's claim of disability discrimination after being told his work was "messy" does not constitute harassment. The manager, who has ADHD, argued that spelling and grammar errors were due to his condition, but the tribunal found that the manager had not disclosed his disability before the comments and that the comments were factual and intended to help him improve.

Aloha dear SmartBrief on Workforce readers,
 
What an issue! I had fun putting this one together. I found lots of rich, intriguing stories to get the gray matter moving. Here are a few thoughts about my favorites. 
 
Scrubbing in. Holly, my daughter’s bonus mom, is one of the kindest, warmest and most sensitive people I know. These qualities have served her well in her more than 20-year career as a nurse. She is also one of the strongest people I know. Holly is titanium; nothing fazes her. She manages chaos and crisis with calm and patience. 
 
Character like this is why more businesses are looking at nurses to fill their talent needs, as we see in our Leadership & Development story from Forbes. Companies need people who can handle pressure, take criticism, and work with professionalism and empathy. Nurses do this and have a speedy learning curve for new skills. Smart organizations will step out of their candidate comfort zones and consider some of these folks. 
 
Hacked! Scammers are getting better and better, and have turned their sights to the HR world, as we see in our Leadership & Development story from Axios. I was unnerved to see that the victim in this story lost nearly $8,000. The money just vaporized from her accounts. Employers are going on the offensive to protect their brand from these fraudsters. Stay tuned to see how well this works. 
 
Are you listening? My cousin Kailee has often disarmed me during conversations by looking at me as if what I’m saying is the most important thing he will ever hear. He has a way of holding a gaze that lets the speaker know he is paying attention; he is hearing him or her. That so matters! There’s something encouraging and important about being heard, as we see in our HR Leader story about deep listening. Done right, it can transform communication and relationships in our personal and professional worlds.
