In the spring of 2022, Mark Williams left Cleveland after nine years with the city’s orchestra to run the Toronto Symphony Orchestra. Amid Trump’s anti-DEI crusade and hostile takeover of the Kennedy Center, Williams has been thinking a lot about who gets to have a voice in the arts. “I’m a six-foot-one Black gay man,” he says. “I have to be very mindful about putting myself in situations where I will have a fair shake.” |
