Dear Yogi, In the yoga tradition, meditation goes much further than calming the mind and improving sleep - it is a powerful tool for transformation. When we meditate, we create the space to observe our thoughts, behaviours and emotional responses. These deep-seated mental impressions and habitual patterns, called ‘Samskaras’ in yoga philosophy, are often formed through past experiences and unconsciously influence our daily interactions with ourselves and others. Meditation can help us break the cycle of Samskaras by creating a pause between stimulus and reaction, and offering us an opportunity to respond from a place of clarity and choice.
