Corruption attempt: Someone who state officials said tried to breach the Lake County Board of Elections’ computer network last May failed because of a common elections security measure that became mandatory statewide in 2019. Andrew Tobias reports that all 88 of Ohio’s county boards of elections have been required to keep their computer systems separate from their main county networks since 2019.

Cuyahoga budget: Cuyahoga County Council on Monday proposed adding about $21 million to the 2022-23 budget, including restored funding for some, but not all, of the unfilled jobs that County Executive Armond Budish slashed in his proposed budget as a cost-saving measure. Kaitlin Durbin reports that among council’s changes is roughly $5 million for more corrections officers and $4 million for Department of Children and Family Services social workers.

Drug prices: Some prescription drugs can cost tens of thousands of dollars. Why? Julie Washington writes of genetically altered cells, pharmaceutical companies striving to increase profits while trying to recoup research and development costs, hospitals struggling to balance budgets stretched ever tighter, and soaring health-insurance premiums. At $210 million, Alteplase topped a list of drugs that hospitals spent the most to purchase in 2017.

Police grant: The Cleveland and Cuyahoga Metropolitan Housing Authority police departments will use $4.25 million in grants from the Department of Justice to hire more full-time officers. Olivia Mitchell reports Cleveland will hire 30 officers and CMHA four. The awards cover up to 75% of an officer’s salary and benefits for 36 months. Law-enforcement agencies then commit to retaining the officers for at least another 12 months.

TODAY IN OHIO

Gov. Mike DeWine signed the bill creating new Ohio congressional districts set to strengthen Republicans’ already-dominant share of the state’s congressional delegation -- despite a promise for fair maps. We’re talking about whether DeWine broke his word on Today in Ohio.

Hope for the Holidays: Retailers have been warning of a toy shortage this holiday season, but Cuyahoga County’s Division of Children and Family Services wants to make sure there’s no scarcity for children in foster and kinship care. Kaitlin Durbin reports the county is asking the community to donate gifts for its Hope for the Holidays program, which will provide presents to more than 4,000 area children and teens in foster care this year, or to adopt one of 200 kinship families through the Adopt-A-Family program.

Progressive Field: A Cleveland City Council committee on Monday signed off on the proposed $435 million deal to extend the Cleveland Guardians’ lease of Progressive Field, setting the full council up for a final vote on the deal next week, Courtney Astolfi reports.

Home sales: The number of homes that sold in Ohio in October was lower than the same month last year, though prices continue to rise in many areas of the state. Eric Heisig reports that statewide, the average home sales price was $240,509, an increase of 8.2% from the same month last year but a slight decrease from September.

Van crash: Five people are dead after a tractor-trailer struck a van Monday morning in Newbury Township in Geauga County, Cory Shaffer reports. A commercial flat-bed tractor-trailer struck a Ford Econoline van with a driver and six more passengers inside.

Anne Nickoloff reports the local nonprofit awarded 2022 grants to hip-hop group Muamin Collective, pop singer-songwriter Marcus Alan Ward, indie-rock band Biitchseat and psych-rock group Oregon Space Trail of Doom.

PS5: Mark Cerny, lead system architect of the PlayStation 5, breaks down all that went into the creation of Sony's latest video game console for cleveland.com’s sister site, Wired.

Deck the Hall: This year’s theme of Stan Hywet Hall & Gardens’ Deck the Hall brings the magic of movies to assorted sets within the classic Akron estate. The tastefully holiday-adorned estate and grounds are available for self-guided tours beginning Friday, with more than a million lights, reports Marc Bona.
