International Day of Older Persons

The United Nations' (UN) International Day of Older Persons is celebrated annually on
1 October to recognize the contributions of older persons and to examine issues that affect their lives. The theme this year is Resilience of Older Persons in a Changing World.

A longer life brings with it opportunities, not only for older people and their families, but also for societies as a whole. Additional years provide the chance to pursue new activities such as further education, a new career or pursuing a long neglected passion. Yet the extent of these opportunities and contributions depends heavily on one factor: health. More information here.

WHO Dementia R&D Blueprint

The first WHO Dementia R&D blueprint will be published on Tuesday, 4 October.

Dementia is one of the greatest health challenges of our generation and we are currently failing to meet the targets defined by the Global action plan on the public health response to dementia 2017-25.

Addressing this challenge requires that research and innovation are an integral part of the response; strategies are needed to better understand, prevent, and treat the underlying disease and, at the same time, provide care and support for people with dementia and their carers.

This is the first WHO initiative of its kind in the context of non-infectious diseases and it will support the global action plan implementation and provide guidance on how to accelerate dementia research and innovation globally with a focus on making research more efficient, equitable and impactful.

Launch of AI health worker version 2.0 at the World Innovation Summit for Health

The World Health Organization will launch the A.I.-powered WHO Digital Health Worker, Florence version 2.0, offering an innovative and interactive platform to share a myriad of health topics in seven languages at the World Innovation Summit for Health (WISH) in Qatar. Florence can now share advice on mental health, give tips to destress, provide guidance on how to eat right, be more active, and quit tobacco and e-cigarettes. She can also offer information on COVID-19 vaccines and more!

Video course: Delivering quality health services to refugees and migrants from Ukraine

Since the beginning of the Ukraine crisis on 24 February 2022, millions of people have fled Ukraine, crossing borders into neighbouring countries.

On 5 October 2022, WHO will release a first-of-its-kind video course titled, “Delivering quality health services to refugees and migrants from Ukraine”, which is intended to support health workers in hosting and receiving countries to provide quality and safe care that is responsive to the circumstances and particular health needs of people from Ukraine seeking health assistance.

This course develops knowledge and understanding among health workers on the application of WHO’s “Refugee and Migrant Health: Global Competency Standards for Health Workers”. The Global Competency Standards identify a range of competencies and behaviours to assist health workers in providing culturally sensitive care to refugees and migrants. The course supports health workers by demonstrating how the Global Competency Standards can be adapted to and applied in real settings, in this case to migration and displacement from Ukraine. 5-7 October

WHO informal, focused consultations (IFCs)

Next week, the intergovernmental Negotiating Body (INB) of the WHO will be conducting two further informal, focused consultations (IFCs) with experts on two different key issues. These IFCs will be open to all WHO Member States and relevant stakeholders.

The consultations will provide a forum for interactive discussion between Member States, stakeholders and subject matter experts to advance understanding of the work of the INB. The 2nd IFC on 5 October, will focus on Operationalizing and Achieving Equity and the 3rd, on 7 October, will focus on Intellectual property (IP), and access to pandemic response products.

This is the 2nd and 3rd IFC in a series of four to be held this Autumn. The first was 21 September and focused on legal issues.

Both IFCs will be available to stream here at the following times:

· Second IFC - 5 October - 12:00-15:00 CEST
· Third IFC - 7 October - 14:00-17:00 CEST
