Monday, 13 September High-level Ministerial Meeting on the Humanitarian Situation in Afghanistan UN Secretary-General António Guterres will convene a High-level Ministerial Meeting on the Humanitarian Situation in Afghanistan on Monday, from 1500-1700 CEST. The meeting will highlight the acute needs in the country and will underscore the urgent funding support and actions required by international partners to support the Afghan people during their time of need. Wednesday, 15 September New Snakebite Information and Data Platform Snakebite envenoming impacts the lives of millions of mainly poor people and kills an estimated 81,000 to 137,000 people annually. Its consequences lead to around three times as many amputations and permanent disabilities. Friday, 17 September WHO/ILO estimates on work-related disease and injury On Friday WHO and the International Labour Organization (ILO) will launch their first joint estimates on work-related disease and injury during a virtual press conference. World Patient Safety Day For World Patient Safety Day, 17 September 2021, WHO urges all stakeholders to “Act now for safe and respectful childbirth!” with the theme “Safe maternal and newborn care”. Approximately 810 women die every day from preventable causes related to pregnancy and childbirth. In addition, around 6700 newborns die every day, amounting to 47% of all under-5 deaths. Moreover, about 2 million babies are stillborn every year, with over 40% occurring during labour. Considering the significant burden of risks and harm women and newborns are exposed to due to unsafe care, compounded by the disruption of essential health services caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the campaign is even more important this year.
