Treasures Worthy of a Museum

Why not in Your Home

(or Collection)?

What are investors and collectors REALLY putting their money on?

.

You've heard me use the term, “Own a Piece of a History” several times before, because frankly that’s what we collect, Historical artifacts!

.

And this Memorial Weekend Featured Treasure most certainly falls into that category.  One of our most exciting genres of collecting is historical photography, in particular Civil War era. But did you know where it all began?  Do you know when the very first photograph was produced?

.

Some say it was in 1827 by Nicéphore Niépce. However, his photo was barely legible so it wasn’t considered a commercial ready photo.  It wasn’t until about 1840 when the daguerreotype (Dag) was the first commercially successful photographic process.

.

Who was the first President to be photographed?

.

The one-of-a-kind daguerreotype of John Adams seen above. The Adams photo is intrinsically significant to both American history and to the history of photography. In March 1843, Adams visited Haas' Washington, D.C., studio for a portrait sitting, becoming the first U.S. President to have his likeness captured through the new medium of photography.   This Adams Dag sold at auction in October 2017 for $360,000.

.

I guess if someone is willing to pay $12.6 Million for a Mickey Mantle rookie card last year, $360K doesn’t sound like much for a 180 year old major historical photo like the first president ever photographed.

.

In my opinion Dag photography was an Art form. And anyone who has collected Dags can tell you high quality, high contrast Dags like what we recently acquired are of the utmost rarity as probably more then 90% of Dags were low quality and/or have since suffered from environmental deterioration.     What adds to their value significantly are the very few where the subjects have been identified.    Like One that we have.

.

This week we acquired some Amazing historical Civil War and mid 19th Century Dags. See these gems HERE.
