Where NOLA Eats

BY ANNETTE SISCO | STAFF WRITER

Happy Thursday, food-lovers! Our fall Jazz Fest with its beloved food vendors is not happening, but unique smaller events planned around it are forging ahead. Restaurants may become solar-powered neighborhood hubs during future energy outages. And Saturn Bar has reopened! Let's dig in...

1. Brunch date!

While the rescheduled, then canceled October Jazz Festival turned out to be only a brief blip on the calendar, events planned around it will go on. One is BreakFest, an early-in-the-day event with brunch, music and even yoga. Ian McNulty has the story.

2. Shine a light.

Some New Orleans restaurants became community hubs after Hurricane Ida, handing out meals and supplies.  In the future, with solar panels and a battery for storage, they might also provide emergency power for neighbors. Check out the creative problem-solving in this story.

3. Wait! There's more.

The Caesars Superdome is back in action, and look! There's a Caesar salad on the menu! The owners of St. John tell us what it's like to open in a pandemic and a hurricane. A new breakfast spot called Up and Adam ... definitely is. And the old-school Saturn Bar is back under new management.

4. Harvest home?

October is upon us, and with it Louisiana autumn produce. Food writer Teresa B. Day has yummy recipes for fall table favorites like candied sweet potatoes and smoky lima beans.

5. Calling all crawfish.

Jazz Fest is still on hold, but with streaming classics from WWOZ-FM and smaller live music events still on the books, the Fair Grounds can come to you. One member of the Where NOLA Eats Facebook community asked for the recipe for crawfish bread. She got plenty. Check them out and chime in here.

That's it for the food newsletter, but in New Orleans the food news never stops. For more, visit us at NOLA.com. Have a great weekend, and thanks for reading!

I Eat Louisiana: Bring on fall with Candied sweet potatoes and lima beans

It’s technically cozy weather season, even though it doesn’t feel like it yet in south Louisiana. Honestly, I haven’t whined this much about the heat and humidity since that summer the air conditioning broke in my station wagon. Read more
